Case story vs case fic/casefic/etc?

This article kind of flip-flops between using "case story" and "case fic". Looking at the links to this page, it looks like variations on "casefile" are actually used the most (probably because of the dedicated x-files editors!) so I'm not sure that that's a useful metric. Here are just... some vague thoughts? For discussion?

The only fan comment on the page uses "casefic". I've never actually seen someone use "case story" before. Who uses it? How do they use it? There are only 57 works that show up when searching "case story" on AO3. Is "case story" more popular on earlier archives, on LJ/DW, or in zines? Can we dig up some comments using "case story"?

Also, should we use only "case story" for this page? That feels weird to me (coming from a strictly "casefic" side of things, lmao) but I think it's kind of weirder to use both terms interchangeably. And, like, are they interchangeable? Relationship Story and shipfic do not seem to be interchangeable, as "shipfic" leads to shipping.

Finally, the intro to this article currently makes it sound like case stories are only written for canons that already have case story narratives baked in (and specifically kind of like maybe only for procedural TV shows?) but I've read a lot of things tagged "casefic" that I consider casefic that are for canons who don't usually have casefic/case story narratives. Should the page be expanded, or is that the difference between a case story and a casefic? - Hoopla (talk) 21:10, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

I agree with pretty well all of this. As I also come from the "casefic side of things", I find the name of the article odd—the more so given that other terms are used in the body of the article at least as often as "case story". It would be good if the terminological variation was sorted out. Was "case story" once more common (or, like "case file" was it usual in some particular fandom)? I also agree that casefic (or case fic) is the more common term I've seen as well. I just assumed that case story was an older term. If everyone is in agreement we could rename this one casefic (or case fic) and put case story as a synonym -- Kingstoken (talk) 14:38, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

Ah, I came here from the [Featured Article Nomination], but since there's already a lot of agreement i'm gonna go ahead and move it. Since the Article title is what will get used to promote the Featured Article on social media, I think it's better to stick with what is at this point the more commonly used and recognizable term. -- Quaelegit (talk) 02:43, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

Also, as per previous discussion on Talk:Rational fic I am using Title Case. I do *not* like this standard (genres and tropes get used as common nouns -- look how nobody capitalized "case fic/casefic/case story" in the previous comments on this page! Remove the "Example Fandoms with Stories" section?

Case Fic#Example Fandoms With Stories is just a list of fandoms with no discussion, explanation, or context. I suppose a lot of those fandom *do* tend to have episode structures similar to casefic, but I have no idea if the *fan* content for those fandoms is particularly likely to be casefic. I'd like to either add context/explanation, or remove the list. -- Quaelegit (talk) 03:30, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

Okay while I was typing this out User:Cavewomania renamed it to Case Fic#Popular Fandoms for Case Fic but I'm not sure that's what this list is??? Some of these are big fandoms where eveything is popular, some of these (House MD) are small-to-midsize fandoms where, personally speaking, everything I've seen has been character and ship-focused stories, not casefic. -- Quaelegit (talk) 03:34, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

I thought that was what the fandom list was, oops. I agree it should be removed, or at least expanded upon. I can see why these fandoms are listed as popular for case-fic, but unless someone who's familiar with all these shows wants to write little explanations for them, the list should be removed.--Cavewomania (talk) 03:42, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
