Talk:Activities

This seems like just a list of things people do. A list like this could be endless... and generally unhelpful and non-fannish. By the contents of this page, someone could look at the fan art I've made of a character licking their lips and say "Ah, this is fan art, and the character is drawn licking their lips. Thus, this is a fan trope/activity!" I don't know, some of the content here just feels random. Like a list of things to do when you're bored. Do we really need to describe every single possible thing someone can draw a character doing, even if it's rather basic? I can see how bathing and watching movies could be one, as I've seen both of these as common romance tropes in fanfiction, but bird watching, reading out loud, sleeping...? Idk. Just my thoughts. Romance and Horror, for example, are not exclusive to fanworks. But they became fannish by fans writing/creating works within that genre. We catalogue how they do so here. Also, people find certain things comforting, or seek out fics with these activities, or enjoy writing simple slice of life works which consist of mundane things like having a movie night. Yes, licking one's lips may be insignificant to you, maybe to everyone, but would it actually be harmful in any way to have that catalogued? Why? Fanworks are an expression of both humanity and creativity and just because something seems dull to you does not make it unimportant or irrelevant to every other fan. That's my argument, anyway. But I've saved the information here, so you guys can delete this if you would prefer. :) - Jacksbrak (talk) 03:29, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
I would make the same argument about this page that I made on the Talk page for Dialogue. The issue with these types of pages is not that the content on them isn't worth documenting but that having such a broad page isn't going to make it easy for people to find that content and learn about it. A fully-fleshed-out page on "Activities" would have to contain a sea of information about all kinds of activities across every fandom and thus would be near-impossible to navigate. The scope of it needs to be more constrained for it to be useful. Something like "Literally Sleeping Together", just to pick one example that caught my eye on this page, is something that could have a page (as long as it was distinct enough from Sharing a Bed) because it's a common motif for fanworks and something that fans are likely to have discussed, making it possible to find fan comments about the subject and to explore how it makes its way into fanworks.
The same could be said for something like ice skating, though I would explore that through the lens of ice skating AUs. So yes, these are all things that are worth documenting, but it isn't as useful to have them all lumped together on a page like "Activities". It is so broad that it quickly becomes unwieldy.--enchantedsleeper (talk) 20:11, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Given the discussion on this page and the Dialogue talk page, it looks like this should be deleted, so I've updated the Proposed Deletion template. --caes (talk) 02:43, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

Thank you. --MPH (talk) 03:20, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
This page was marked for deletion in Nov 2020 and there hasn't been any further argument to keep it up since. I'm going to go ahead and delete the page. Patchlamb (talk) 19:47, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

second creation

This page seems to have been deleted once before, possibly for the same reason I'd like to bring up now. The glossary category is meant for fannish terminology or other specialized terminology that is relevant to fandom. But "activities" is just a regular word in English. I don't see a fandom connection. We do have a glossary page for fanac, a specific fannish term, and a category, Category:Fan Activities if anyone wants to see a list of fannish activities.--aethel (talk) 22:57, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

æthel sorry for creating the page, it was marked in a later section of the wish list. I think maybe creating a redirect page from activities to fanac is interesting. Ellakbhesse (talk) 23:12, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

æthel I've made the page a redirect so no one else can be tempted to create it. Ellakbhesse (talk) 00:04, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
