Sunny is the protagonist and player character of the surreal psychological horror RPG OMORI. His name is up to the player's choice, but is first set to Sunny, and he's called Sunny in all promotional material by creators.

Canon

Sunny is around sixteen years old during the events of the game, and hasn't left his house in four years due to trauma from his sister, Mari's, death.

As a child, Sunny had a vivid imagination and would often daydream through class. He was quiet and didn't like to smile in photos, but both Basil and Aubrey found that he was a good listener and easy to vent to. Sunny decided to play in a recital with Mari to spend more time with her, but found that practising the violin was wearing on him, and grew angry with Mari. In one fight, Sunny was so angry that he threw his violin down the stairs. Mari yelled at him, and when he tried to push her away, he pushed her down the stairs, killing her.

Basil, who was coming over for an unrelated reason, helped Sunny disguise Mari's death as a suicide, an act with traumatized them both deeply. Shortly after this, Sunny stopped coming to school, and started living primarily in his dream worlds, known as White Space and Headspace, as Omori.

Fandom

Sunny is often headcanoned to be selectively mute or otherwise speaking less than others. He is also quite commonly perceived to be Japanese or Japanese-American, due to his appearance, Mari's name, and the Japanese influences in the games — including Omori being named after the Japanese term hikikomori.

There is a popular consensus that Sunny is deeply traumatized by killing Mari and faking her suicide, but opinions on his parents vary quite a bit. Some view his mother as a good mom who's trying her best whereas some believe she's neglectful, and some believe in a more nuanced view of her. Sunny's father is mainly viewed negatively, as his only appearance is him saying Sunny isn't his son and being completely absent in the real world.

The most common ship on the Archive of Our Own involving Sunny is Aubrey/Sunny, followed closely by Basil/Sunny. Far less common, but still with many fics is Kel/Sunny.
