Mari is one of the deuteragonists of the surreal psychological horror RPG OMORI. While she is dead — stated to have committed suicide — four years before the game takes place, she plays an important role in Headspace — a world dreamed up by her younger brother, Sunny — and as a ghost in the real world.

Canon

Four years prior to the events of OMORI, Mari was one of the eldest in a group of friends consisting of her younger brother Sunny, her implied romantic interest Hero and his younger brother Kel, Aubrey, and Basil. She and Hero were seen as the big sibling figures of the friend group, making food and breaking up fights, especially between Aubrey and Kel.

On the day of a recital she and Sunny were practising for, they got into an argument due to Mari pushing Sunny too hard. In this argument, Sunny pushed Mari down the stairs, accidentally killing her.

In Headspace, a world Sunny created to repress the trauma of the incident and that he inhabits as Omori, Mari is not a playable character and instead heals the party and provides a save point. It is stated by a voice in Deeper Well that Mari is unplayable due to Omori's unwillingness to see her die.

In both Headspace and the Real World Mari appears to Sunny as a voice or a ghost — one that Sunny may be entirely hallucinating — encouraging him to overcome his fears and forgive himself for her death.

The two main manifestations of Sunny's trauma surrounding Mari's death are Hellmari (stylized as HELLMARI) and Something (stylized as SOMETHING). Both haunt Sunny throughout the course of the game.

Fandom

Many fans view Mari as a caring character towards Sunny, and particularly focus on her perfectionism as a character flaw.

There is also a lot of jokes with Mari being dead, and irritation at these jokes by some people in the fandom. Additionally, many feel as if she is brushed aside by both the game and the fandom in favour angst for other characters — particularly Hero and Sunny.

The most common ship with Mari is Hero/Mari, which is implied to be canon. While it is far less prevalent, the next most common ship is the darker Mari/Sunny, which explores sexual abuse and incest between the two siblings.
