Con Reports

Sadly enough Star Trek was practically ignored in favor of Star Wars and Logan's Run costumes. There were a few Starfleet costumes here and there, however. One excellent one was on a young man who looked astonishingly like a young Captain Kirk.

'Runner' - A very interesting game organized by fans. Actual 'runs' were enacted with Sandmen in uniforms and Runners in Citizens costumes or plain clothed. Based on Logan's run. Very realistic.

All in all, Starcon was an excellent convention. It took place in the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego. The fans were enthusiastic about practically everything, the events were well organized, the hotel staff were courteous and understanding. Young and old attended and enjoyed this convention. I am personally looking forward to the next con. [1]

It was the first time I had ever flown, so I was nervous for the first little while until I got used to it. After that it was pretty neat.

We arrived in San Diego a couple of days ahead of time since we wanted to know something about the place before the con started.

The con started at 1 p.m. Friday and went until about midnight Sunday. Most of Friday I spent in the Dealers' Room spending money, about $80,00 worth of stuff on both Star Trek and Space 1999. Friday night turned into Saturday morning - with me up until 2 or 3 am, watching the 'Dark Shadows' movies.

Saturday, I saw Marion Zimmer Bradley, and a Star Trek episode, 'Mark of Gideon' (I found out later they had been showing the episodes all day, but I only caught that one,) Saturday night, I saw the Masquerade in which there were a lot of Luke Skywalkers, Princess Leias and even a Darth Vader. One of the winners was a little girl in a Star Trek costume, another, a little 'Luke' boy.

My favourite was Darth Vader, The best costume in the set was a monster from Star Wars, the cantina scene. Also on hand was a Wookie, Han Solo, Ben Kenobi, a baby Wookie, Wonder Woman and Truth and Lies, Other than these, I didn't recognise anyone else.

On Saturday afternoon, Walter Koenig conducted a Question and Answer session. Some of the key points were as follows; there will be 3 new officers on the Bridge crew, a 22 yr old full Vulcan Science Officer, Commodore Decker as 1st Officer, and a female navigator. So where does Chekov go? A promotion to Lieutenant and head of Security. He is in charge of Kirk's welfare.

The uniforms, music etc, he thinks will remain relatively the same as the old style.

In ending, he told us this story: when filming the Bridge scenes, they were looking out into the stage, when they were supposedly looking at the 'big screen in front. When someone was feeling good, they'd put a picture on this stand, put there so the actors would be looking at the some thing, when they were supposed to be looking at the viewing screen. Anyway, one day someone had put the centrefold from a Playboy on this stand. Walter said his hardest line throughout the 3 years he was on the crew was when Chekov had to look at that picture and say (he put on his Russian accent) 'Captain, I don't know what that is!' [2]
