The Soldier is one of the nine playable classes in Team Fortress 2. He is a fan favorite and the focus of many fanworks.
Canon
The following description borrows heavily from his official bio on the Team Fortress 2 website.
Jane Doe, AKA the Soldier, is a wildly patriotic American in the vein of cultural depictions of George Patton. Contrary to what his name may imply, he has never been an enlisted member of the United States Armed Forces. After being turned down by all branches of the military, he bought his own ticket to Europe to fight in WWII, going on a Nazi-killing spree that lasted until 1949. He later developed a deep friendship with the Demoman, which was temporarily broken after both were manipulated by their superiors.
Fandom
Soldier has taken a leading role in some prominent fanworks; for example, he is one of the protagonists of the acclaimed fan film Emesis Blue. Soldier has featured in a great deal of fanart. He does not have the spotlight as much in fanfiction; as of November 2023, Soldier has appeared in over 2600 works on AO3 and over 200 works on Fanfiction.net, considerably fewer works than characters like Scout.
