At Ease, Soldier is a zine focused on Soldier from Team Fortress 2. It is dedicated to Rick May, Soldier's voice actor, who passed in 2020. Rick May was beloved in the Team Fortress 2 fandom, as well as others, including Starfox and Sly Cooper.
On April 8, 2020, Canadian-American voice actor and writer Rick May passed away due to COVID-19 related complications after a stroke. May was beloved by many video game fans worldwide, known particularly for roles such as Peppy Hare in Starfox 64, Dr M in Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, and The Soldier in Team Fortress 2, and appreciated for his quick wit and kind heart.Today, April 8, 2022, on the second anniversary of his passing, we honor the man who played characters we love and—to quote the voice actor of TF2’s Sniper, John Patrick Lowrie—“whose passing leaves a huge hole in my heart and I believe so many others.” With the help of over 30 different artists and writers, the At Ease, Soldier zine was made to do just that.
I want to thank mods TB, Lucafont, mich, and Muffin for all the work they’ve done and support they’ve given in helping make this zine a reality, as well as all our wonderful contributors for all the beautiful pieces of artwork they’ve created in order to share with you today. I want to thank you for deciding to pick up the zine and join us in the celebration of the life of a man who meant so much to so many.
And most importantly, I want to thank Rick May for providing us, not only as TF2 fans but as general goers of the internet, with unforgettable characters and neverending laughs. I’m so honored to have been able to host this year’s tribute and I hope that you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed being able to watch it come to life.
