Roxas (ロクサス, Rokusasu) is a Kingdom Hearts character.

Canon background

Roxas is Sora's Nobody, a being created out of the body and soul of a strong-willed person who has been turned into a Heartless. [1]Although Sora regained his body, Roxas remained in existence and was recruited to Organization XIII. Like all other members, his name is an anagram of the name of the person he was created from, with the addition of an "X." Roxas's appearance is very similar to that of Ventus, which is implied to be because Ventus was inside of Sora's heart when Roxas was created. Although Roxas and Sora are quite similar, Roxas is more melancholy and thoughtful, and also more inclined to rebellion.

Roxas's first canon appearance is in Kingdom Hearts 2, during a period where he has lost his memories of being a Nobody and is trapped within a computer simulation. In the digital world, Roxas has a close-knit group of friends and he is dismayed to learn that his life is not "real," and resentful of the implication that he must disappear in order to bring Sora back.

We are given insight into his time with Organization XIII in Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. During this game, Roxas is one of two new members of Organization XIII (along with Xion), and is mentored by Axel. The three become close, but the internal politics of the organization, Roxas and Xion's connections to Sora, and Riku's efforts to wake Sora up end up leading to tragedy. At the end of the game, Roxas is absorbed back into Sora, who wakes up.

Roxas reappears briefly in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, showing up in Sora's mindscape to share his memories with Sora. A data version of Roxas also appears in Kingdom Hearts: Coded as a final boss.

In Kingdom Hearts 3, Sora and his friends are able to restore Roxas to his own body, which allows him to act as one of the Seven Guardians of Light, reunite with Axel and Xion, and to help Sora in the final battle against Xehanort. In the epilogue of the game, he is among the people looking for a way to bring Sora back.[2]

Reception and meta

Before the release of Kingdom Hearts II, there was much anticipation and speculation concerning the mysterious Blond-Haired Kid (BHK) appearing in teaser previews.[3][4][5]

Fanon and tropes

KH FANFIC STEREOTYPES by alltheickyjobs (circa May 2016)
  • As noted in KH FANFIC STEREOTYPES by alltheickyjobs, 2000's-era fanfic frequently portrayed Roxas as Sora's more "emo"/depressed twin, and nonmagic AUs often used drug use and terminal illness as metaphors for Roxas's health issues and eventual absorption by Sora during 358/2 Days.
  • The sea salt ice cream that Axel, Roxas, and Xion share in the game is an important symbol in canon, and is often referenced in works involving Roxas.
  • A significant portion of Roxas's gameplay in KH 2 involves riding a skateboard, leading many fanfics to make skateboarding a major hobby of his.

Relationships

  • Roxas x Naminé (RokuNami)
  • Roxas x Axel (AkuRoku) - The fandom's juggernaut ship alongside SoRiku. As the lore eventually made clear that Axel is an adult about 10 years older than the underage Roxas, the ship's popularity diminished, and some AkuRoku fans migrated to AkuSai (Axel x Saïx).
  • Roxas x Xion
