Fan Reactions
From the beginning of the series Rory Gilmore, an intelligent and precocious teenager, was a fan favourite.
I'm actually starting to think that Gilmore Girls was ahead of its time- deeply flawed protagonists are a big thing now, but they weren't in 2000.[1]
Particularly from Season 4, fans began to question her decisions and re-evaluate their opinion of her character. Some fans were critical of her because "she slept with a married man, stole a yacht, and sponged off her grandparents".[2] A small number of fans saw Rory's poor relationship choices as a continuation of the mistakes her mother, Lorelai had made. She was also criticised for been unaware of her privilege, getting into Yale because of her grandfather's connections and expecting a successful career would be easy to achieve. Yet other fans saw her story as true to the lives of many millennials her age.[3]
Similar complaints were made about Rory's character in the Netflix revival, but many fans were hopeful that she would grow as a character if the series returned for another season.
Relationships & Pairings
Fans of the Gilmore Girls have very strong opinions on who Rory should end up with. This discussion around this intensified with the announcement of the Netflix revival. There were Team Jess, Team Dean and Team Logan fans. Other fans were Team No-One, believing Rory should follow her dream and move forward with her own life, rather than getting back together with a former boyfriend.[4]
