Renee Montoya is a DC Comics character.
Canon
Batman: The Animated Series
Renee Montoya was originally created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian for Batman: The Animated Series, premiering in the episode "Pretty Poison" (September, 1992). A young cop fresh to the force, Montoya was not sure what to think of the Batman, or costumed folk in general.[1]
Renee was a recurring character on The New Batman Adventures and the Gotham Girls web series, which took place within the Timmverse.
Comics
Renee Montoya first appeared in Batman #475 (March, 1992).
Renee is a detective working for the Gotham City Police Department underneath Commissioner Gordon who frequently allies herself with the vigilante Batman and his associates. Her most regular partner was Crispus Allen, and she has also had a relationships with Kate Kane and Daria Hernandez. Following the death of her mentor Vic Sage during 52 she takes on a costumed identity, becoming the Question in efforts to eliminate the Religion of Crime. She is a member of Batman Incorporated and the Global Peace Agency.
Renee also appeared in various other universes within the DC comics: DC Bombshells, Titans Tomorrow, Flashpoint, Injustice: Gods Among Us prequel and Earth-3/Forever Evil. She has only been mentioned in Smallville's Season 11 comic series.
Other Adaptions
Renee, portrayed by Victoria Cartagena, appeared as a detective with the Major Crimes Unit of the Gotham City Police Department in the TV series Gotham. She has only appeared in Season 1. Renee is Barbara Kean's ex-girlfriend, which was unknown to Jim Gordon until their break-up. After Barbara left Jim, she moves in with Renee and sleeps with her again. However, Renee believes it was a mistake and leaves Barbara.
Renee also appears in the Batman: Bad Blood animated film. She meets Kate Kane at a bar where they two get along and gives Kate her phone number.
Fandom
This article or section needs expansion. |
Renee Montoya is one of the more well known lesbian and POC Batman/DC characters along with her girlfriend Batwoman. Despite this there are not a lot of fanworks focused on her[2]. Most of the fannish activity surrounding Renee is on Tumblr where people post fanart, picspams, gifsets and other graphics focused on her as well as some discussion posts and fanfiction. Fanfiction is mainly posted to Archive of Our Own. Fanart is also posted to Deviantart. Despite appearing in other adaptions, Renee's fandom is mainly focused on her in the comics (DC/Batman/Batwoman) rather than the DCAU or Gotham.

- ^ AO3 only lists 292 works as of September 19, 2017, FFN only lists her as a character in the Gotham section (which only lists 4 works) - although this is not a perfect method to represent popularity since FFN only started added characters mid to late 2000s and not everyone uses them.
