Nie Mingjue (聂明玦) is a character in the serialized danmei novel Mo Dao Zu Shi (MDZS) and its audio drama, manhua, donghua, and live-action drama adaptations. He is the Sect Leader for the Qinghe Nie clan.

His honorary title in the various source materials is Chifeng-zun (赤锋尊, often translated into English as "Red Blade Master"), but especially in English-speaking fandom, he is still referred to simply as his Chinese familial term, Dage (older brother).

Canon

In the novel and the various adaptions, Nie Mingjue is the older half-brother of Nie Huaisang. Their father was killed during a night hunt, caused by Wen Ruohan's meddling; therefore Nie Mingjue is famous for his antagonism to the Wen clan, and he is a hero of the Sunshot Campaign against the Qishan Wen.

He wields a saber (Chinese dao) named Baxia, and he is affected by the Nie Clan's saber cultivation method - the fighting style and resentful energy (from creatures), makes qi deviation more likely. He can be intolerant of those he doesn't perceive as having the same commitment to morality, and related to disagreements about the moral course of action, Jin Guangyao makes subtle changes to musical cultivation from Lan Xichen that was intended to soothe NMJ's qi. Instead, Jin Guangyao modified it to provoke qi deviation, which is eventually fatal for NMJ and he becomes a fierce corpse.

One fanon theme in modern AUs is that Nie Mingjue is Dage (older brother) not just to Nie Huisang, but to their group of friends.
