Canon

Haku is an orphan that Zabuza Momochi picked off the streets and trained. He has referred to himself as Zabuza's "tool". His mother was killed in Kirigakure's bloodline purge. Haku inherited a bloodline limit from his mother, Ice Release.

During Zabuza and Hatake Kakashi's first fight, Haku intervenes by "killing" Zabuza and escaping with his body in a Hunter-nin's disguise when it seems like Zabuza is about to lose his life. While Zabuza is recovering in preparation for another attack, Haku runs into Uzumaki Naruto asleep outside after training. Haku and Naruto have a meaningful conversation about their precious people. During the battle on the bridge, Haku is ordered to engage Uchiha Sasuke. He is forced to take Sasuke seriously and uses his Ice Release to trap Sasuke in a ring of ice mirrors. Using the same method of falsifying a kill with his senbon as he did with Zabuza, Haku takes down Sasuke, prompting Naruto to lose control and channel the Nine Tails' chakra. In the end, Haku sacrifices his life for Zabuza by taking Kakashi's Chidori to the heart.
