Final Fantasy IX is part of the Final Fantasy franchise by Squaresoft (now Square Enix). It is a RPG and was released on the Play Station console (PSX). As with most Final Fantasy titles, the game was set in a newly created universe and with fresh characters. Unlike the two games before, FFIX featured a medieval setting and distinctly different character design.
Set in Gaia, the player follows the journey of Zidane, a human with a monkey tail and part of a group of bandits. The group kidnaps Princess Garnet, only to find out that she had been planning to flee from home anyway to see her uncle, a regent from another city. During their escape the group's airship is damaged and crashes, at which point the main story begins.

Despite receiving critical acclaim, Final Fantasy IX did not achieve the same level of commercial success as its predecessors on the PlayStation 1. This could be attributed to the impending release of the PlayStation 2 in Japan during that time. Some individuals expressed their dissatisfaction with the game, citing reasons such as the majority of the main characters being either monsters or children, and the absence of charismatic characters like Cloud, Sephiroth, or Squall from previous titles. Eiko faced significant backlash from the fandom, being perceived as an annoying little girl. Although physically resembling Sephiroth, Kuja did not garner the same level of popularity being often mocked for his androgynous appearance. However, over time, people began to appreciate the game for its story and thematic elements. Vivi, in particular, gained a strong following among fans due to his compelling backstory.
Pairings
Ships aren't as varied in Final Fantasy IX as other games in the series, due to the physicality of some characters (Freya, Vivi and Quina not being human, Eiko being extremely underage, etc.), however a few popular pairings exist:
