Dark Femslash Week is an annual challenge that encourages participants to create fanworks for a series of themed days. The challenge takes place on tumblr (although creators can link to fanworks posted elsewhere). Dark Femslash Week encourages all contributions, including short works like drabbles and WIPs; as well as accepting all fanworks (including recs, fanvids, fanart, manips, etc) and original F/F stories and art.

The challenge ran in October in 2017 and 2018. After not running in 2019, the challenge moved to February and now coincides with Femslash February.

2017

The first week ran from October 15–21. Throughout the challenge, the moderator also posted fandom statistics for how many f/f works on AO3 were tagged with certain dark themes, like noncon. The additional rules for submission were:

"We’ll take all kind of participations - fic, art, fanmixes, meta, graphics, recs (of fan creations or canons), plot bunnies, headcanons, fan casts, anything! Don’t hesitate to participate even with small things!
[...] Any F/F (or F only poly ship), of F/non-binary character if you feel it works. Always a girl!AUs are in only for last day.

The content must have some dark themes. For example, for incest or power imbalance, if you really think it’s a situation that makes it totally okay and healthy, it doesn’t count. It can be resolved, but it must be here. As long as this is respected, if you wonder “does it count?”, it does.

Warn for all kind of sensitive content."[1]

Day One

The theme for Day One was Noncon/Dubcon.

Fills:

Day Two

The theme for Day Two was Incest.

Fills:

Day Three

The theme for Day Three was "Abuse/Power Imbalance".

"Verbal or physical abuse, manipulation, whatever you choose. One-sided or mutual. As every day, you’re the only one who decides whether the power is unbalanced enough for your fic to feature in a dark femslash week event."[2]

Fills:

Day Four

The theme for Day Four (Oct 18) was "Underage/Big age gaps". The mod specified that "It doesn’t have to be illegal, in your country or in the character’s country, but the age gap or the precocious experiences must be enough to be dark, unhealthy and/or squicky."[3]

Fills:

Day Five

The theme for Day Five was "Character death".

"The character must be part of a femslash ship. You can of course use the (very frequent T_T) character deaths that we have in our canons, or you can kill new ones - or in different ways. I adore resurrection fics but here it would be cheating. Darkfic is the point!"[4]

Fills:

2018

2020

The themes for 2020 varied from previous years, with a series of quotes from poetry serving as the prompts for each day, with a final "free day" at the end. The challenge did not attract as many fills as the previous years.

And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane. (I think I made you up inside my head.)” Sylvia Plath, Mad Girl’s Love song

February 19th: “have you tasted For my sake the fruit forbidden? Must your light like mine be hidden, Your young life like mine be wasted” Christina Rossetti, The Goblin Market

February 21st: “I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground. So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind: Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. February 22nd: you fit into me like a hook into an eye a fish hook an open eye Margaret Atwood, [you fit into me]

February 23rd: Free Day[5]
