The zine contains descriptions of how zines were "rated." Many of them were very factual, such page count, info about illustrations. Some of the criteria included opinions about content and were more subjective. Some examples of the latter:
Plot: This category was a tough one. Sometimes we encountered plots that were intricate and original but not in keeping with the premise of the show. Then we would find stories that virtually had no plot or expounded on an existing episode yet were wonderfully absorbing. Oftentimes our ratings in this category were "seat of the pant's impressions and while we tried not to be subjective in this review, we may have failed here.
Character Integrity: Here we omitted "alternate universe" and "crossover" stories. This category had to do with the authenticity of the characters. Would they say these things? Would they say them in this way? Would they do these things? Would they do them in this way? Can you close your eyes and imagine them?
Believability: Here we again omitted "alternate universe" and "crossover" stories. This category rates a story on how close it remains to the premise of the show. Do you believe that this could happen to the characters given what the show has presented to us thus far? Does it sound like it could be an episode given what the show has presented to us thus far?
From the introduction:
Welcome to the BEAUTY AND THE BEAST LIFELINE review. We are reviewing herein 25 fictionzines. Our selection of these particular 25 does not indicate anything other than these are the ones we happen to own. A word about how and why this review came into being. We found fans with whom we were in touch voicing questions about the zines.
We also found ourselves wondering the same things -what do they contain- which ones should we buy? One can easily spend several hundreds of dollars and there has been a growing reluctance on the part of many fans to part with their money without knowing something about the zine. Thus the review was born and we hope it proves helpful.
Please remember that these are amateur publications and have involved much work, love and dedication on the part of the writers and artists.
Since tastes vary so widely we are not going to judge the quality of the writing. We leave that to you, the reader. Our approach was for the three of us to read each zine independently, rate it on a numerical scale and write any comments we felt necessary. We then pooled our ratings and averaged them out. Thus you may see a whole number score as well as a fractional score.
