Stuff it for bandom (hosted on the bandomstuffsit comm, which became the colloquial name for the challenge) was an annual Bandom holiday fic exchange on LiveJournal that ran for three years from 2010 to early 2013. After signing up, participants were assigned someone to write a story for and given roughly two months to produce a "stocking stuffer" story for their recipient. Stories needed to include warnings and be at least 1,500 words.[2] These stories were posted over a period of 12 days in late December anonymously by the bandomstuffsit mod account, and the authors were revealed in early January.

bandomstuffsit was discontinued after the 2012-13 exchange. untappedbeauty, the moderator of the exchange, noted in a final post that "My time in bandom has passed, and LJ as a venue for this exchange is becoming outdated and unstable" noting that an Dreamwidth backup would be created if LJ ever became unsuitable.[3] That dreamwidth backup was created in April 2017, at a time when LiveJournal users were concerned about the site's TOS being changed to comply with Russian law, and other fans started bandom_holidays on dreamwidth as a replacement.

History

bandomstuffsit, the LJ comm for the exchange, was created 26 Sept 2010 with the rules and sign-up instructions for the first event being posted two days later on Sept 28 and left open for roughly two weeks.[4] Assignments went out over the next few days, and participants had roughly two months to produce a fic at least 1,500 words long for their recipient. The 46 stories produced for the exchange were then posted from 22 Dec 2010 to 3 Jan 2011 by the stuffitmod, with a week between when the posting finished and the authors being revealed. In the interim, people were encouraged to guess who wrote what fic by the mods.[5]

The second exchange's rules and sign-up post went up on 2 Oct 2011, with sign-ups being open for two weeks.[6] The exchange was more or less the same as the previous year, however there was one slight change: participants were allowed to know who their recipient was instead of it being kept anonymous.[6] Once again, 46 stories were produced and these stories were posted from 23 Dec 2011 to 6 Jan 2011.

Because of the delay in some stories causing them to be posted slightly late, authors were revealed later in the evening on Jan 6 instead of a week later as in the previous year.[7] This delay may have been due in part to a downsizing in the mod team. The first year, bandomstuffsit seems to have been run by three moderators (untappedbeauty, boweryd, and fallintosilence)[1] but for the second and third years the mod posts are only signed by untappedbeauty.[7] The biggest culprit, however, seems to have been untappedbeauty being lenient with deadlines as the rules and sign-ups post for round 3 went up on 30 Sept 2012 with a new section:

INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT NOTE: If you dropped out last year without letting me know you couldn't complete a fic, you will not be allowed to participate this year. If you sign up, you must commit to finishing a gift. If you unexpectedly need to drop out, email me to let me know as soon as possible so I can find a pinch hitter. Otherwise, you will never be allowed to participate in this exchange again.

Anyone who needs a deadline extension will get ONE THREE-DAY EXTENSION. If you don't meet your second deadline, you won't get another extension, I'll just start looking for a pinch hitter. Last year I allowed too many extensions and got burned, and I won't do it again.

The second round change of participants being able to know who they were writing for was also reverted as it apparently caused problems for untappedbeauty.[8] bandomstuffsit's third round generated 30 stories, posted from 22 Dec 2012 to 2 Jan 2013. Authors were revealed a few days later on Jan 6, with untappedbeauty announcing that the challenge would not be running for a fourth year.[3] As of 2018, the LJ community had 185 posts and 2,716 comments.[9]

Eligible Bands

Like many other pan-bandom challenges in the wake of the Bandom Terminology Debate, bandomstuffsit specified which bands could be included in sign-ups:

For the sake of this challenge, we define bandom as including Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, The Young Veins, The Academy Is..., Cobra Starship, Empires, The Like, Gym Class Heroes, The Hush Sound, The Cab and Hey Monday. Current AND former band members are fair game.

You may ask for intra- or interband pairings, and you're also allowed to ask for pairings that include band members' significant others/spouses as well as fringe bandom people such as Brian Schechter, Zack Hall, Shane Valdez, etc. However, these people MUST be paired with a band member/former band member. So Bob Bryar/Brian Schechter, for example, is A-OK. But Shane Valdez/Zack Hall would not be accepted; nor would Audrey Kitching/Jac Vanek.

However, if you request pairings that include a fringe character, you must also request at least two pairings that are composed solely of band members/former band members.

- Exchange rules and signups[4]

This falls into the definition of "bandom" as Decaydance+ or "Big Three and Friends" rather than simply "a fandom about bands." For the 2012 challenge, a few of the bands were removed from the list, and The Used and The All-American Rejects were added:

You can ask for pretty much any bandom pairings you want. Just remember we're working from the premise that bandom isn't any bands ever. It has traditionally included Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, The Academy Is..., Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes, The Used, The All-American Rejects, The Hush Sound and related bands. Several of those bands are no longer together, but anyone who was at one time a member can be included in this challenge.
