The convention zine went on hiatus in 2006. However, the convention made a call for donations of fanzines to the BASCon Zine Library. The post-convention progress report announced: "Thank you to those who donated zines to the library. We appreciate your generosity. Some of them are rare and hard to find. Depending on the size of the convention space next year, one idea is to actually have a zine reading room!"

Panels

Friday, November 3

9:30 am – 12:00 pm ConGoer Morning Mingle. It's early (not that early, but for some this is the crack of dawn) so get yourself registered then take a few moments and mingle with some other like-minded morning folk.

1:00 - 2:00 pm

  • House (Moderator: Tracy L.). Do opposites attract? Is that what makes House and Wilson a viable couple?
  • Smallville (Moderator: Mistress Ace). The Creation of a Villain - was it planned or what were the writers smokin'?
  • CSI - Las Vegas (Moderator: Nadine). Join your moderator in her current slash obsession! Gil/Nick? Nick/Greg? Warrick/Jim? Heck, how about Catherine/Sofia? We'll discuss all the tasty flavours this great emsemble cast offers. (Note: This will be a GSR free-zone.)

2:00 - 3:00 pm

  • Rareslash (Moderator: Zenia). An obscure fandom. One (or maybe more) obsessive fan. Come discuss your favorite rareslash fandom.
  • Pros (Moderator: Kris). After thirty years, what makes The Professionals such an enduring fandom?
  • What's New On the Tube? (Moderator: D. Ramsey). It's fall and new TV seasons have started or are about to. What's been a hit out the gate so far? What's been a dud? Have returning favorites lost their edge or are they still going strong?

3:00 - 3:30 pm. Jericho: *This* is the Apocalypse? (Moderator: Lady J). The bombs have fallen and somehow, the town of Jericho survives week after week. But did anyone crack open the disaster manual yet?

3:30 - 4:00 pm. Veronica Mars (Moderator: Zenia). Veronica's in college but that doesn't mean she isn't up to her neck in a mystery. Come discuss current developments and what might be coming down the pike.

3:00 - 4:00 pm

  • Criminal Minds (Moderator: Tracy). Four male members of an ensemble cast. Is there a OTP? If so, who? and why?
  • Taboo Subjects (Moderator: K'Kathy). The boundaries of slash propriety continue to fall, with subjects like RPS, underage slash and incest fic gaining popularity in a variety fandoms. How do we justify to our critics (or rationalize to ourselves) these formerly taboo subjects? Is the net solely responsible for why these taboos are falling faster than ever?

4:00 - 4:30 pm - Meet the ConCom: A brief break to check in with the BASCon folks.

4:30 - 5:30 pm

  • Due South (and it's Six Degrees of Fandom) (Moderator: Malnpudl). This panel will focus on other Paul Gross and Callum Keith Rennie media
  • How to Find Fic on the Web (Moderator: Nix) . So, you've just been sucked into a new fandom. You want to devour all the fic in existence...but where is it? Is there an archive? How do you know? Or maybe there is an archive, but that's all you can find...is there any more fic out there? The mod—and hopefully resourceful fellow panelists!--will present tips on how to Google for unarchived fic, how to find archives that are shielded from search engines, where to look for the beginnings of link trees, places to look for rare fandoms, and more.
  • Kink (Moderator: Rebecca) . Kink: D/s, bondage, S&M, what makes some pairings work and some don't? What's the appeal? Do some fandoms lend themselves more to kink than others? Why do we want to see one person on his knees and the other telling him what to do?

7:00 - 9:00 pm - Friday Night Mixer: Fun, frolic and a little bit of fortune telling thrown in for good measure. There might even be some dancing. (Note: We have the room until midnight so if folks want to hang out and keep the party going, feel free.)

9:00 - 10:00 pm - Femmeslash: "But some of us like the girl bits!" (Moderator: Lady J). Is there a way in which m/m sexuality is held to a higher standard than sex between women? And how might that affect the femmeslash that does see its way to the light of day?

9:00 - until it's over - He/He Game (Hosted by JennCat). MadLibs with a slash story twist)

9:00 - 12:00 - DIY (Do it Yourself): The Presidio Room will be open for anyone who want to run an hour-long panel on the fly. Look for the sign up sheet outside the room. First come, first served.

10:00 - 11:00 pm NaNoWriMo for Nite Owls (Hosted by Lady J). Have a daily word count to make? Ready to start up your next chapter or two? Here's a quiet space to do that in.

Saturday, November 5

9:00 - 10:00 am

  • Stargate SG-1: Daniel and his Relationship to Team Leaders (Moderator: Crystal). Over the course of the series we've seen Daniel grow into his own. Thought it might be fun to explore how the relationship with Jack make Daniel the man he is today? What is his relationship to Mitchell and how did the relationship with Jack prepare Daniel for that relationship.
  • Slash: Opium or Utiopia? (Moderator: The Enigmatic Big Miss Sunbeam). Why do we do what we do? Are we laying the groundwork for a better world or escaping the pain of this one? This all-fandom roundtable is open to discuss our understanding of our avocation and, just maybe, encourage us to go to the next level, whatever the hell that would be.

9:00 - 9:30 am - Eureka – the town where nerds and science reign.(Moderator: K'Kathy). While most viewers probably identify with the recently arrived mundanes Jack and Zoe Carter, there’s a plethora of interesting characters in this show. There’s Henry, the save-the-day genius who works out of his automotive garage, and Vincent, who always knows what you want to eat when you visit Cafe Diem. Deputy Jo, who can out-tough any of the guys, and Fargo, Nathan’s subby but likable little lab weasel, and Beverly, town hostess, shrink, and double agent, just to name a few. Let’s discuss how the characters make the show, and if any slash is present.

9:30 - 10:00 am - Hex - The sidekick is the scene stealer! (Moderator: K'Kathy) . Two seasons of Hex have been released on DVD but only the first shown in the US. While the show starts out with typical Brit pacing of painfully slow story advancement, Thelma Bates is quickly revealed to be one of the most interesting and kick-ass sidekicks to come along in years. A curvy lesbian in unrequited love with her witchy room mate; Thelma’s sacrificial death and subsequent come back as a ghost does little to diminish her pursuit of fun, food, and fashion. Let’s chat about the charmer of this show

10:00 -11:00 am

  • Dr. Who (Moderator: Claire). There's a new Doctor in town. How do his present relationships differ than those of the past?
  • Numb3rs: Rare Pairs (Moderator: Nix). Do you love Numb3rs, but just can't see Don and Charlie as anything but brothers? Then this is the panel for you! There are 13 other slashy (or femmeslashy) possibilities, and that's without bringing secondary characters (Edgerton anyone?) into it. Share your favorite alternate pairing, wax poetic about the canon support, the chemistry, the moments!
  • Writing Sex (Moderator: Malnpudl). Just what the title says: exploring ways to write sex in fic.

11:00 am – 12:00 pm

  • Stargate Women: Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way (Moderator: Lady J) . Even though the writing isn't always great, the women of both Stargate shows hold a lot of femmeslash potential. Come discuss your favorite along with possible ways to utilize them in fic.
  • Threesomes (Moderator: Rebecca). Do threesomes take away from a particular pairing, add to it? What happens when you add a woman into the mix? Can it be done successfully?
  • Power of Myth (Moderator: Lady Ra) . Using a Joseph Campbell "Power of Myth" perspective, how can we use these wonderful characters we love so much to aid us in our own personal journeys?

1:00 - 2:00 pm

  • NCIS (Moderator: Nix and Lady Ra). Can you make canon work for you, or are there some things that just can't be fixed? The big ones are the season two and three finales, but there are smaller difficulties, too. How do you manage to perserve your pairing love through these trials? Mental filters are wonderful things—share your rationalizations!
  • Supernatural (Moderator: D. Ramsey). Two hot studs. So what if they are brothers? Why is RPS and incest so prevalent in this fandom? OR Not the car! OMG, not the car.
  • Darkfic (Moderator: K'Kathy). Last year, we forged a safe place to discuss fic preferences that often make other slashers cringe and run for cover. J This year, let’s discuss what exactly makes a story “dark”, and how we categorize that darkness. Can darkfic be categorized by kink practiced, blood spilled, torment inflicted, or shock delivered? Or is it more nebulous and personal? Bring your recs and the reasons why you find them dark.

2:00 - 3:00 pm

  • Stargate Atlantis: Don't Ask, Don't Tell (Moderator: Rebecca). Air Force regs, institutionalized homophobia, whatever you call it; how to write about it, deal with it, avoid it, handwave it, or otherwise cope with it in your story? (John/Rodney focus)
  • Heroes (Moderator: D. Ramsey). Ordinary people. Extraordinary powers. What makes this show so compelling?
  • Battlestar Galactica (unmoderated) . It's a tough galaxy out there for humans and Cylons alike. Come discuss the latest developments in season 3.

3:00 - 4:00 pm

  • Crossovers (Moderator: Malnpudl). Each show has its own pairings, but sometimes it's fun to hook up guys (or girls) from two favorite, but totally unrelated, fandoms. Why do we do it? Is there no character we like enough on one show to pair up with our favorite? Do we not see any chemistry between characters of one show, but still want to slash them? Is it just to get the pretty boys together? Come and share your crossover pairings of choice! Astound us with the crackiness of them—or surprise everyone by how well they work! Everyone is encouraged to bring crossover pairing fic recs.
  • Are you Bi-Fictional? Het fic in a slashers world! (Moderator: Keeker) . Do you cringe to admit to your hard core slash friends that sometimes you like to curl up with a Samantha Carter/Jack O'Neil story, or sometimes you crave a hot PWP with House & Cuddy? Canon or just a het pairing you would like to see here is the place to share.
  • When Ethics Go Walkabout(Moderator: Lady Ra) . What's our response when the shows and characters we love turn ethics on its ear? Examples: Atlantis POW genetic manipulation, NCIS and Boston Legal: sexual harrassment. If time permits, we'll discuss ethics and fanfic as well, i.e. underage sex. There are no set opinions here, it will be an open-minded discussion panel.

4:00 - 5:00 pm

  • Race, Fandom & Fiction: What happens next? (Moderators: Coniraya and Lady J). We've all been to the Race 101 panels that discuss the presence of Race in Fandom. We've agreed that People of Color should figure more in fan fiction but what do we do next? How do we go deeper into a discussion on Race, Fandom & Fiction? This panel will concentrate on what to do in discussions on race in fandom and maybe more importantly what not to do.
  • Lost (Moderator: Corbeau). What's going on on the island now?
  • Classic Legacy (Moderators: Kathy Resch, Caren Parnes, and Gayle F). Beyond Dreams Press will be publishing an ambitious, one-of-a-kind K/S zine called Legacy in 2007 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of K/S. "Legacy" will be a commemoration of all that has brought K/S fandom to 2006-through retrospectives on the history of zine publishing, K/S on the internet, K/S conventions, letterzines, art and much more. The many articles and interviews will present a true and compelling story of the beginning and development of the very first slash fandom, and they will serve as a valuable resource not only for new fans joining us but for anyone who wonders how K/S was rooted, blossomed, and thrived.

5:00 pm – 6:00 pm - Star Trek New Voyages (Moderator: Crystal). Working with George Takei on a newly created episode of original Trek for the Internet. We wrote fanzines and drew pictures... now fans are making their own 60-minute episodes. Will share experiences of Hollywood pros and fans coming together to create magic for the internet.

Sunday, November 6

12:00 - 1:30 pm. Vid Show Rewind (Moderators: Lierdumoa and Permetaform). Like it, love it, want more of it? Here's a chance to discuss Saturday's main event: the vid show.

Panel Reviews/Notes

Below is a partial list of panels published in the post-convention Progress Report:

  • Darkfic – Once again, a lively discussion was had about the fic that makes many fellow slashers shudder. Reminder to all fans of dark-themed fanfic – post your recommendations and peruse others at darkfanfic.
  • Taboo Subjects – While we never did determine exactly why there has been no great fannish outcry against Wincest, we sure had fun talking about it! Of the folks who attended the panel, there were very few subjects that were truly taboo. The only subject that had everyone discussing boundaries was chan slash (slash with one or more characters under the age of consent), but there were many viewpoints – okay if both characters were underage; okay if between adult/youth if the power imbalance was portrayed as manipulative; never okay unless the power imbalance was shown as harmful to the younger character. Incest, death, RPS, and rape themes are now seen as normal components of slash fic.
  • What’s New on the Tube-Once again, this was one of the lively panels, with con members talking about what new shoes are good. Some of the contenders, we say, that will make it to the final cut, are “Ugly Betty”, “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, “Heroes”, to name a few. It was also a “pimping” stage, as people tried to get others to watch their new favorite show. There were some VERY convincing arguments!
  • Heroes-As we all chanted, “Save the cheerleader, save the world!”, we found ourselves with a myriad of diversified opinions and discussion of who is good and who is not, who will die and who will make it. As we tallied our votes, our favorites are Peter, Claire, Hiro and Mohindar. If you don’t know who these characters are….quick! Run to your friend and watch what you have missed!
  • Supernatural-Dean and Sam Winchester-gen and slash-were talked about and drooled over. Intelligent conversation, questions and answers were brought to this panel. Many funny and serious stories were discussed as were websites and LJ’s for those seeking new written delights. And yes, we all want a black ’67 Chevy Impala parked in our driveway!

anoel also offered her panel notes[1] and so did denyce.
