Astarion/Wyll is the canonical pairing of Astarion and Wyll in Baldur's Gate III fandom. This pairing is canonical if the player chooses to start the game using Astarion or Wyll as the player character.

Canon

While playing as either Tav or The Dark Urge, Astarion will express some interest in Wyll, mentioning he can see the appeal of him as a prince-like character and that he finds his horned appearance attractive.

While playing as either Astarion or Wyll, the pairing can be canon.

One of MTG's Secret Lair cards, Sanguine Bond, features Astarion about to drink blood from Wyll in a shirtless, intimate embrace.[1]

Fandom

Although the pairing doesn't appear in the initial list of paring names on AO3, this is due to multiple tagging on Tav pairings, which takes up space. Wyllstarion appears to be the most popular Astarion pairing after Tavstarion & Astarion/The Dark Urge (there is significant overlap, as many fans consider Tav and The Dark Urge to be the same character), Bloodweave and Halstarion.

Pairing name and representation

The most common names for this ship are Wyllstarion (Smooshname) and Bloodpact (Blood because Astarion is a vampire, and Pact for Wyll's pact with Mizora).

Common Tropes and Themes

  • Baldurians: Both Astarion and Wyll are from Baldur's Gate. Their knowledge and love of the city is part of many works in the fandom.
  • Monster hunter and Monster: Wyll is a monster hunter, who tracks down and kills beings like Astarion, a vampire.
  • Becoming monsters: Due to Astarion's transformation into a vampire spawn and Wyll's punishment by Mizora if he fails to kill Karlach. Fans draw parallels between these two.
  • Mutual attraction: It's implied, or outright stated, in several canon instances that both men find the other attractive.
  • Selfishness vs selflessness: Many fans express interest in the idea that Wyll can help Astarion become less cynical and care more for others, while Astarion can help Wyll learn to advocate for himself more and be less unhealthily self-sacrificing.
  • "Where were you when I was new?": Astarion canonically hates "good guys" or "hero types" at the start of the game, though he expresses interest in Wyll for the same reason, stating "Wyll's the sort of prince-type I would have once dreamed of marrying. When I was about thirteen.". Because of this, it's common to use this as reasoning for their relationship, have Astarion push Wyll away due to conflicted feelings over having a "hero" possibly rescue him from his slavery, only to eventually succumb to his desires for care, protection and companionship. It's also canonical that Astarion can become a hero in the end of the game, depending on how it was played, and thus, Wyll and Astarion can end up being heroes together. The name of the trope is taken from a quote in The Last Unicorn.
