Wednesday is a 2022 Netflix live-action television series about Wednesday Addams. Wednesday is part of The Addams Family, a property originally created by cartoonist Charles Addams.
Canon
The series follows Wednesday Addams during her time as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents.
Main Characters
Season two cast announcement and accusations made against Percy Hynes White
In May 2024, it was announced that three of season one's regular cast would not be reprising those roles, reporting that the characters of Xavier Thorpe and Yoko Tanaka would not be returning to the show in any capacity, and Sheriff Donovan Galpin would only return as a guest star, likely to wrap up the Tyler story arc[1] [2].
In early 2023, accusations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct were made against Percy Hynes White by a user on Twitter[3], and prior to the May announcement, there was already speculation that he would not be returning for season two with some outlets reporting in September 2023 that he would be written out[4].
Fandom
As with many recent reboots and adaptions there was apprehension toward the series when it was first announced, with many speculating over its quality. The initial fandom established itself on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram, further expanding to Tumblr and Reddit upon the release of season 1. Being an Addams Family spinoff the fandom inherited many longtime fans, as well as fans from fandoms that have always been friendly with the Addams, such as Beetlejuice.
Following the release of season 1, fan recreations of Wednesday's now iconic dance from episode 4 to the Lady Gaga song "Bloody Mary" went viral on TikTok. Numerous celebrities also participating in the trend including Lady Gaga herself. This resulted in a large increase in plays of the song on Spotify and brought the song into the Billboard Hot 100.[5] The 1981 song "Goo Goo Muck" by the Cramps, which plays during the original dance scene, also saw a surge in popularity. The trend was acknowledged by Wednesday within the season 2 announcement trailer which also featured Bloody Mary throughout.[6] This scene and others, as well as marketing for the show, felt to some as though they had been done specifically with a potential TikTok audience in mind. With Stranger Things moving to it's final season, it was suggested Netflix were actively looking for their next big series to take over from it[7].
Let's be completely honest here though, the scene was shoehorned in precisely because it would go viral amongst the tiktok kiddies, and it's worked wonders. The type of person who replicates this on tiktok and/or watches other people doing it don't really care about internal consistency within the show/character.klopptimus-prime [8]
Shipping
Following the release of promotional images featuring Enid and Wednesday the two were quickly shipped together thanks to their highly contrasting aesthetics and status as roommates. The canon relationships that Wednesday went on to have with Tyler and Xavier gained interest after the show's actual release, though they did not necessarily detract from Wenclair's popularity as it went on to cement its status as the most popular ship to come out of season 1. There is also a significant amount of reader-insert fics written for Weems, Wednesday, Tyler and Xavier on Wattpad and Tumblr.
A popular headcanon for Wednesday is that she is aromantic and/or asexual, and so there is a lot of discussion on if Wednesday should have a love interest at all. These discussions have been further fuelled by the negative reception the love triangle storyline received by some viewers and critics.[9]
