cover by Susan Lovett -- "A Melding of Worlds/Soliloquy" -- "Wow! What a way to start! These representations of Kirk and Spock are both technically and emotionally perfect. There is Kirk, surrounded by the lush waters of his home planet, and Spock, from the sere, arid landscape of Vulcan reaching out across the vast differences that separate them to each other. And is it just my imagination or does Kirk‘s emotional moisture extend into Spock‘s dry control and draw him toward love? That I studied this lovely color cover long enough to come up with a theory is testament to an artist who has enriched our fandom with her skills for years. Thank you, Suzan for this new piece." [1]

The K/S Art Project is a 90-page slash Star Trek: TOS anthology of art, stories and poems.

It is letter-sized zine with comb binding, a color cover and extensive color and black and white interior art.

The zine contains extensive art that has appeared in other fanzines over the past 3 decades. Several new pieces of art and several new artists were showcased, however.

Each piece of art is accompanied by NEW poetry or prose, all written by Dovya Blacque.

Summary

From the distributor, Agent With Style:

In a drop-dead gorgeous zine, with a full-color cover by Suzan Lovett, Dovya Blacque has collected many of her funny, thoughtful and heartwarming stories and poems, and then asked dozens of talented artists if she could use their eye-catching work to illustrate her prose. Every artist immediately agreed, and the list of names on the table of contents is like a "Who's Who" of the best-known talent in K/S fandom! In this 90-paged zine, you'll find Lorraine Brevig, Maureen B., Shelley Butler, Marilyn Cole, Merle Decker, Deeb, Gayle F, KOZ, Caren Parnes, Chris Soto, TACS, tvals01, L.A. Adolf, Arminaa, Diegina, HWF, Meg Kelly, Suzan Lovett, Melinda Lynch, Princess of Swords, Romanse and The Southern Cross, many of them submitting *brand-new* pieces to accompany Dovya's beautiful words.

Reactions and Reviews

I‘m a bad reviewer and I‘m sorry but I do have to pimp and recommend the K/S Art Project zine in any case as NOT doing so is simply out of question. So all I can do here is to say what effect it had on me and hope it‘ll be helpful for anyone.

When I got the zine one late afternoon I first just flipped through the pages, admiring the art and checking what I've known and what not. Some I liked immediately, some I learned to love only later. All the while I thought I'm keeping this for a special occasion to read. That's what I thought. Then I started reading one poem and liked it so much. Then I needed another. And after this one another and - you get the idea - I couldn't stop reading. I could manage though to stop myself rushing through it which gratefully enabled me to cherish every single word. And although I read them all within an hour or so, each one was new and unique and touched me differently. And oh yes how they touched me. I have to say I really like Dovya‘s writing a lot. Each time I finished reading a piece I would sigh deeply and my heart would overflow once more with love for those two men. I loved finding out which POV's every poem/story is written from and should I have guessed wrong I started again just so I won't miss any sensations. (Isn‘t that always the fun part?) I loved the tender and gentle tone and just how much love there is in and between the lines and how much she can give me the feeling of being close to the two of them. I loved how amazingly fitting the texts are to the art and I've been surprised myself of how much more/deeper I've sensed the art after reading. It works, you know. I can't even name favourites as all of them are. (But check out 'Mourning Amanda' and 'At Ease'...I purred.) I‘m so happy I did order the zine as reading it warmed my heart and soul and sent oh so many fluffy Spirk sparks through me.

Thank you, Dovya, thank you very much! [4]

The titles that follow are not the original ones in all cases but they are the titles of the poetry and prose pieces Dovya has included. It‘s uncanny how she managed to match the illos, but those locs will have to wait for another time.

These are just a few of the art pieces that made me gasp out loud:

Cover—A Melding of Worlds/Soliloquy by Suzan Lovett—Wow! Thank you, Suzan for this new piece.

The Last to Know by Chris Soto—Kirk and Spock in tuxedos. What else is there to say? I remember when I first saw these marvelous black and white head shots I was absolutely blown away. So suave, so man-about-town, so sexy. Yum. Plus Spock in black. Can you ask for more? No, me either.

Oasis by Deeb—A wildly romantic vision of a very young Kirk and Spock kissing under a waterfall. I love Deeb‘s illos of our heroes before death and rebirth and age have mellowed them somewhat. The joy of young love in all its glory and innocence and it‘s always spring. Aah....

Another 6 Six Word Stories by Caren Parnes— Here it is: that wonderful moment at the end of The Galileo Seven when Kirk accuses Spock of being a stubborn man...and Spock agrees. The affection that Kirk is projecting is palpable, and Caren has captured it perfectly. An oldie and a goodie.

From Gol by The Southern Cross—Okay, this just about stole my breath away. Spock. Spock with long hair releasing that iron control long enough to relax back in his lover‘s arms. Just exquisite. I think the Kirk is less successful, but I have to admit it took me a long time before I even glanced at him. It‘s been ages since we‘ve seen anything new from The Southern Cross. I fervently hope this piece means we will see more K/S art from her in the future. She holds a unique place in our fandom., and I, for one, will never have enough.

Safe Harbor by Suzan Lovett—A second new piece by Suzan! Be still my rapidly beating K/S heart, and this one is spectacular! Framed by 'our ship' and the star chart she uses to sail the stars on one corner, and a three-masted schooner with wind filling her sails and the map she uses to sail the seas in the other, are our heroes. Spock is held lovingly in Kirk‘s arms on that 'beach to walk on' that Kirk has found. The time is sunset, but the sun will never set on their love if what Kirk is grasping in his hand means anything. This is wondrous. I find myself looking at it for many minutes at a time, and a smile is on my face.

My T’hy’la by Shelley Butler—What a gentle loving aura this illo projects. Spock is flat on his back, Kirk‘s head resting on his stomach. I imagine we‘ve caught them in the first moments of post sex lethargy. I adore the way Spock‘s hand strokes Kirk‘s head. Just lovely. Words can‘t do it justice. If you‘ve been hesitating over whether or not to buy this new zine, let me set your mind at ease. Yes you have to and the sooner the better. You won‘t be disappointed.

I‘d very much be interested in seeing Dovya do a volume 2 sometime in the near future. The very near future, Dovya. [5]
