The HP Femmeslash Summer of Smut was a 2003 challenge for NC-17 rated Harry Potter femslash stories. It was part of Madam Hooch's Broom Closet's challenge series but coordinated through the LiveJournal community hp_girlslash. Madam Hooch's Broom Closet wrote:
Many have remarked on the relative lack of f/f smut in the HP fandom. Every detail of Harry and Draco's erotic adventures has been meticulously recorded over the past three years. Yet poor Padma and Cho usually suffer in silence, relegated to the tedious existence that is the PG fic.So, for the summer, your charge is simple. Pick a pairing. Write some NC-17.[1]
The challenge coincided with the release of The Order of the Phoenix and thus the introduction of a number of popular female characters, such as Luna Lovegood and Nymphadora Tonks, as well as the less-popular Dolores Umbridge and Marietta Edgecombe. The challenge encouraged femslash writers to try out new pairings and make use of these new characters.
Rules
Unlike MHBC's previous challenges, Summer of Smut required participants to sign up and claim the pairing they would be writing. Only one person could claim each pairing, and a participant could claim up to three different pairings (provided that they wrote a separate story for each).
Participants could sign up to write any unclaimed pairing involving two female characters from the Harry Potter canon; OCs and polyships were not permitted. Stories could be any genre (e.g. fluff or darkfic) as long as it was rated NC-17 for smut. Stories were encouraged to be longer than a drabble, but there was otherwise no length requirement.
MHBC did not host the stories written for the challenge, and suggested that participants upload their fics to Girls' Dormitory (which is now offline) or Restricted Section. There was also a forum at Girls' Dormitory for participants to discuss the challenge and find beta readers.[2]
