Talk:Doom (video game)

From Fanlore
Jump to navigation Jump to search

I created this page because I was chatting with someone about the Doom game ported to AO3, and DOOM is such a big, old, and influential video game & fandom that I figured fanlore ought to have a page on it. But I'm 1) new to fanlore, 2) years out of practice maintaining wikis, and 3) not very knowledgeable about video games in general or Doom in particular. So I'm not really sure what to add to this article that would be helpful. I would love if someone who knows more about video games, Doom, or Doom fandom suggested things to do. I'm happy to help with wording, formatting, organization, I'm just feeling overwhelmed trying to learn *about* Doom and it's fandom to figure out what to include. Category 'Doom'?

I'm wondering if, at this point, we should add a category for Doom to Fanlore? It feels overdue to me. --SecurityBreach (talk) 13:51, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

We've got Category:Doom. Currently the parent categories and the pages in it seem to be about the film adaptation, but I see only 2 pages about the video game fandom, so we could use it for both now and add new subcategories when more pages are created?--aethel (talk) 14:37, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the information! Yes, I'd support that. --SecurityBreach (talk) 14:40, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Rename page?

ok actually now that i'm thinking about this page, should we maybe rename it to something like "Doom Franchise" in the vein of Voltron Franchise or "Doom (franchise)" in the vein of Sonic the Hedgehog (franchise)? because to begin with "doom (video game)" feels a little misleading to begin with since there's not one but TWO different video games in this godforsaken franchise named DOOM (which is why the redlinks are for doom with the year after it. i thought it would match the movie that way.) so at the very least it's actually... two video games. hate that for me, a doom fan. - flyingthesky (talk) 12:07, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. (Can't remember if we need a mod to move pages like this, if so we can ask for help on the Discord) Quaelegit (talk) 06:49, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Does the Doom franchise include the movie? Because we have a separate page for that -- Kingstoken (talk) 10:41, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Wikipedia says the film is "loosely based on" the video games. I haven't seen or played any of them so I've go no further insight here, but if fandom activity for the two are somewhat separate (which seems plausible to me given the pages I'm seeing for the film!fanfic here on fanlore) then I personally would be fine keeping them as separate pages?
