relation with Domestic Fic page?

Hey, just posting this here to get feedback from anyone watching the page, and give decent time to get that feedback before I poke around for the Featured nomination. I’m paraphrasing enchantedsleeper’s suggestions on that Featured nomination, and keep in mind these questions are about how this page interacts with the Domestic fic page: essentially, should we shift this article more towards the “trope” or the “glossary” side? (My paraphrase is that the differences would be examples of the trope being used in fanworks, vs examples of usage of “Curtainfic” as a term.)

  • We could shift this Curtainfic page more towards a “trope”, i.e. more example fanworks.
  • Or should we make this “a Glossary page about the term "curtainfic" and have the Domestic page be about the trope/genre?
  • My (Joanna’s) addition - I suppose the most extreme possibility would be to put most of the trope AND glossary info on this page, and keep the info on the Domestic page minimal, almost combining them. (I’m not necessarily voting for this, it’s just a possibility that occurred to me.)

I not sure what to do with this, because Curtainfic is both a glossary term and trope, it may have been a more popular term/trope back in the day, but I was still able to find people using the term in 2020. However, I will admit that it overlaps heavily with Domesticfic, and domesticfic is a term you see used a lot now, especially as tag on AO3. I'm not we should combine them even if they are basically the same thing, because there is history behind the term curtainfic. I'm not sure what the right course of action is -- Kingstoken (talk) 23:41, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
I didn't know this term until a few years back, but I come from a more manganime fandom background and 'Curtainfic' seemed to me like something more typical of the American cop series fandom cluster. Rereading the article and the comments, to me Curtainfic feels more like buying stuff for a new home, or remodelling, choosing a new sofa, a cute set of mugs, painting the room, put together the Ikea bed, domestic but more DIY oriented than deciding who cleans the litter tray or making lunchboxes for each other or crying watching a movie together. I understand the decision of AO3 tag wranglers of making it a "Domestic" subtag, although if historically the term was used for general domesticity, I can't say cause I was not there (but it seems to be the case for what I read). The term is still being used, or at least the Russian fandom seems to be using it a lot (Curtain Fic Tag) according to the stories recently uploaded. I read some of the Russian fics tagged as Curtain Fic, and there's definitely no DIY aspect in them. They're all slice of life fluffy stories. --Alpha (talk) 08:10, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Basically just agreeing that I see domesticfic used more frequently now and I think it’s because of the AO3 tag - Curtain Fic is a subtag for Domestic. And fair point, we don’t want to lose the history of curtainfic by combining them. I guess I’ll try a mildly-historical glossary/history of usage? Joanna R (talk) 06:07, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
I've made various edits to this page to try and build it out, because it turns out there's a lot that can be said about this as a particular variety of domestic trope. It's been interesting to dig into the debates about whether or not curtainfic is specifically romantic, and also learn that some fandoms have very specific versions of curtainfic. I've revised the intro to include a bit more of a specific definition (I think "focusing on ordinary situations" was getting a bit too general, since that's exactly the same as domestic fic/AUs), but while I want to show how it's distinctive, I also don't want to get into the territory of "this is a definitive definition" since we're just here to record its usage in fandom, which can vary. So, let me know what you think or if we should caveat that a bit more.
I think including examples of curtainfic is a good idea but I'm also wondering how many examples we want to list there, since if you search for "curtainfic" on Dreamwidth you turn up oodles of fic and challenge responses. Do we want to look at notorious examples? Just try to include a variety of fandoms? Do we want fic where the author specifically has applied the term, or where readers have also applied it? (I don't think gyzym ever called The Domesticverse curtainfic, but most would agree it qualifies. However, applying a term that the creator hasn't used can be a grey area in corners of fandom where the term isn't used - lots of people comment that it's not a term used in anime/manga fandom. You could identify the traits and say "I think this is curtainfic", but if the author didn't set out to create curtainfic, is it curtainfic? Discuss xD) --enchantedsleeper (talk) 16:07, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

I think I’ll put the “related tropes” into their own section - it’s important for the page but not quite part of the intro?
enchantedsleeper, I don’t know if this is really an answer to your questions, but I’m wondering about the “manifesting in different fandoms” section, should that be folded into Example Fanworks (there is a quote or two there) or Fan Comments? I wonder if it would seem less… the DS/SPN fandoms less out on their own if they are folded into other sections? I dunno. Joanna R (talk) 07:47, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
