So Wise We Grow is a Kirk/Spock story by captanddeastar. It was written for the 2009 Star Trek Big Bang.[1]
Summary: "Commander Spock, we have located your son," the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock's face that he's never heard of this kid before in his life. "If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week."
The fanart is by brynnamorgan and the fanmix by summerslaughter.[1] WufeiWinner was inspired by the story to create additional fanart: [1] Don't Glomp the Baby Vulcan.
Recs and Reviews
"Spock is shocked to discover that his betrothed, T'Pring, had a son he knew nothing about and who could not possibly be his. However, remembering his own less than pleasant childhood, he claims the boy as his own and resolves to raise him. He believes he will need to resign from Starfleet when Uhura proves to be unwilling to mother a child and angry that he had not mentioned his betrothal, regardless of how differently Vulcans perceive such things. However, Jim is unwilling to lose his first officer and friend, and offers to become a co-parent. The arrangement works amazingly well."[2]
"Delicious kidfic, how I love thee. Alright, so Deastar knows how to weave a tale about family's journey from unrelated strangers to loving completion. Really, the story is delightful, Storek (the child) is good character, and Spock is just too Vulcan for his own good sometimes, even as he is learning to deal with his humanity."[3]
I love Spirk kid fics to be honest and I sincerely loved the entire idea of this one. This was the first I’d seen of Spock “having” a kid and not knowing about it rather than Kirk. I loved the Vulcan child they had to raise and the way that all their relationships changed as a result of the child coming aboard. Really a great fic.[4]
"Jim Kirk jumps face first into being the other parent to Spock's (adopted) kid, and I love it so much. Jim makes a perfectly illogical commitment and then follows through with all his heart, and I love the way their partnership grows as they learn how to take care of Storek, and each other. A favorite comfort read."[5]
My first fic in this fandom, and boy was it a good one! It's a kid fic y'all, but it's not all roses and domesticity. It gets tough and feels very real. I don't know the words to describe how beautiful this fic is and how much it means to me, but if someone were to ask me to prove fanfiction can hold it's own, this is the fic I would point them toward.[6]
Since it was originally posted in 2009, I’ve read this story dozens of times, most recently today. I don’t know why it has never occurred to me before now to make this recommendation, because this fic is definitely in my top five favorite Star Trek fics.... My favorite thing about this is the snark. Kirk calls it Vulcan bitching. Spock is a little snarky bastard, and Storek is just as bad if not worse. Its fabulous and Kirk absolutely loves it, and so do I.[7]
this fic is probably my all-time favorite by virtue of the fact that it has (A) my favorite pairing, (B) my favorite trope (accidentally raising a kid together), (C) pretty much just perfect pacing, characterization, development, and overall construction. this definitely fits the description of top-shelf, could-be-better-than-canon writing.[8]
epic, very well written kidfic.[9]
Oooohh, the characterization in this fic is awesome. Spock is perfect, Kirk is wonderful, and the Vulcan child in this story is - in my opinion - a perfect representation of how a Vulcan child would be after such a traumatizing event. Definitely a must-read.[11]
I CAN’T EVEN BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW GREAT THIS ONE IS! Incredibly well written, it deals with the challenges of raising a Vulcan child, the complexities of his relationship with Spock, Jim and Spock’s growing relationship–it’s beyond words how great this fic is. Fair warning though, this deals with awful child abuse in Jim’s past. It’s not a huge part of the story but it is tough.[12]
