Vidder's Notes

These are responses that were provided by hollywoodgrrl on a "Vidding Meme" post:

8. Which vid was the hardest to make? Long term projects and Big Picture vids are pretty hard to make just bc you may be dealing with a lot of pieces in terms of source etc. But I've found the vids that are hardest to make for me are the ones where I really have to enter the headspace of the subjects I'm portraying and be entranced in some of the heavy stuff within the text. So Smack My Bitch Up got to me when I was vidding it, but Run Boy Run was the most difficult vid probably as that was the most intense world to be submerged in. I remember sitting in a coffee shop during a particularly intense marathon edit session and doing nothing but killing those women and subjecting them to all sorts of horrible things. That REALLY weighed heavily on me at the end of the day. :/[1]

Run Boy Run - The last minute or so basically destroys me. I love how visceral it is, and it's supposed to be like that, of course. It's supposed to be as blunt as the hand that smacks Cersei and the fist that punched Ros. And my favorite moment out of that entire section is that societal boundaries shatter when it comes to the lives of these women in that world and I cry and I cry oh how much do I cry. :'([1]

Reactions and Reviews

Brilliant and absolutely brutal. The initial tight focus on Arya makes you think the vid is going to be about one kind of girl's struggle for survival in Westeros, but as the narrative expands to include Dany and Sansa and then a plethora of different women, it gets hammered in that there's no safe way to be female. The cutting and clip choices are incredible (believe it or not, this was made over five years ago!!!), and I get goosebumps every time I watch it. [2]

(quite possibly the best fan video I’ve ever seen of anything, the editing is unbelievably poignant and beautiful and it’s basically just meta in video form and it’s entirely about the female characters and everyone should watch it)[3]

This fanvid predates the new terrible rape scene in Game of Thrones but is so worth watching;[4]

And then hollywoodgrrl's made one of my absolute favorite vids for GoT --it totally made me cry the first time I watched it: Run Boy Run (starring All the Ladies!!!! from dear Brienne to Catelyn Stark to the women scrubbing the floors after the Red Wedding I LOVE IT SO)[5]

oh look it’s ONE OF THE BEST FANVIDS EVER MADE IN ANY FANDOM excellent.[6]

I have loved your vidding since I saw Marble House, and they are all marvellous. I love your 'gendered' view; the women-centric vids, which make me look at the source material in a new way - as you did with this one. Thank you for including the "villains" - for reminding me of just how cruel a world GOT is for the women.[7]

wwwwow. All of them. You know? All of them.

I kept thinking "is this bit meant to be an upbeat ending?" and no, nothing gets to be simple and pretty and easy.

The sheer fact that it's 'boy', like even the entire song and frame doesn't know that it's women who are in danger here[7]

A fucking plus vid right here. Get that deconstruction, that recentering.[8]

The editing in this will blow your mind. Just insanely good.[9]

ohmygod it’s finally here i’ve waited all day to be able to reblog it AH. I still can’t fully process this vid. I still cry everytime I watch it. If you like women, and Game of Thrones, and the women of Game of Thrones, you need to see this. Even if you don’t like Game of Thrones, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS. It sums up everything about what it means to be a woman in the world of GoT so perfectly. WATCH IT NOW.[10]
