Brienne of Tarth is a fictional character from A Song of Ice and Fire, and is played by Gwendoline Christie on the HBO television series Game of Thrones.
Brienne struggles to live up to the principles of knighthood, even if she cannot take the vows herself. Every knight she has ever met has failed to meet her expectations, and her conviction drives her to peril in the pursuit of those lofty ideals.[1]
Canon
When Brienne is introduced she is at Renly's camp, she defeats Loras Tyrell in a tourney and requests to be made a member of Renly's Kingsguard. Renly is killed by a shadow demon, she flees with Catelyn Stark and goes into her service. Catelyn frees Jaime Lannister, asking Brienne to transport him to King's Landing in exchange for the return of her daughters. Along the journey they are captured by Bolton men, who intend to rape Brienne but Jaime prevents it, but loses his hand in the process. After they are taken to Harrenhal Jaime is sent to King's Landing and Brienne remains as prisoner, but he returns soon after finding that she has been thrown into the bear pit, he rescues her. When Sansa disappears after Joffrey's murder Jaime sends Brienne to find and protect her. Brienne finds Sansa, at first she refuses her service, but after several events she agrees. Brienne safely transports Sansa to her brother Jon Snow. Brienne remains by Sansa's side except when she uses Brienne as her emissary.
