At the beginning of the series Renly and Loras are in a relationship, but keep it a secret because of the prevailing views of the time, although many people suspect. After King Robert dies and the legitimacy of his children is questioned, Renly declares himself King, marries Loras' sister Margaery, and amasses an army. One of five contenders for the throne. During all this Loras is by his side as adviser and member of his King's guard. Before battle Stannis tries to broker a deal with Renly, but Renly refuses his terms. Stannis uses blood magic to create a shadow daemon, who kills Renly.
