Stannis Baratheon is a fictional character from A Song of Ice and Fire, and was played by Stephen Dillane on the HBO television series Game of Thrones.

Stannis and Ned are one of the few lords in Westeros who see being a lord as foremost a civic duty, a series of responsibilities they owe to their vassals, and not just some glory title for their dynasty[1]

Canon

After the death of Stannis' brother Robert, Stannis declares himself to be King, believing that Robert's children are illegitimate, and the red priestess Melisandre tells him that he is the Prince that was Promised. Stannis uses to magic, to create a shadow demon, to kill his brother Renly, another contender for the throne. Stannis tries to take the city of Kings Landing, but untimely fails during the Battle of the Blackwater. Stannis prepares for another assault, but when he hears of the threat at The Wall he travels north and defeats the Wildlings. Afterwards, Stannis travels south to fight the Boltons, when they are trapped by snow Stannis sacrifices his daughter Shireen to the Red God, having her burnt alive. Afterwards, his wife kills herself, half his army abandons him and so does Melisandre. Stannis is defeated by Ramsay Bolton, and killed by Brienne of Tarth.

In the latest book he is currently engaged in battle against the Boltons.
