Qing Han (20 March 1990 – 8 February 2020[1]), known online by her pseudonym Qinni, was a Chinese-born Canadian artist. While she was most prolific in — and best known for — her original art, she was also a fan artist. Qinni also made art tutorials and recommended resources for practicing art skills. After her death, her brother Ze took over the management of her online profiles in order to keep the memory of Qinni alive for family, friends, and fans.

Bio

Qing Han (Qinni) was an influential figure in the DeviantArt community, particularly among digital artists. She was introduced to DeviantArt in 2005, and began posting her own work to the site in 2008. In February 2017, Qinni was awarded DeviantArt’s Deviousness Award in recognition of “Exemplary Membership and an Outstanding Spirit of helpfulness and mentoring within the DeviantArt community.”[2]

She accumulated over 100 thousand watchers on DeviantArt, over 180 thousand followers on Twitter, and over 2 million followers on Instagram.

Qinni cited Jo Chen, Sergi Brosa, and Linda "Enayla" Bergkvist as artists who inspired her.[3]

According to a webpage hosted by Towson University, Qing Han graduated from Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, in 2012 with a BAA in Animation, and worked with Disney XD on Motorcity[4] and also worked as a background painter for a studio contracted by Dreamworks.[3]

Regarding fan art, perhaps her most notable subjects were characters from the Sailor Moon series and Studio Ghibli films.

Han continued creating art into February 2020, and passed away at age 29 on 8 February 2020 after a long struggle with many health difficulties, including a genetic heart condition that required four open heart surgeries, as well as stage 4 fibrosis sarcoma cancer.[5]

Thousands of admirers made fan art tributes to her art style and motifs, shared using the hashtag #galaxiesforqinni (alternatively #starsforqinni).

I see you enjoy creating fan art. Which fandom is your favorite?

[Qinni]

I think it varies from time to time, but I think my favourite 3 fandoms are probably the teen wolf, x-men and harry potter fandoms. Harry potter being the oldest and longest one. But actually, the more I like a fandom, the less I find myself willing to draw for it, sort of fearing that my art won't do the fandom justice. I should overcome that.[3]

Notes

  1. ^ In Brazil the image has become mainly a sticker used in applications like WhatsApp. Few users, however, knew of the authorship of Qinni, but after her death some came to feel afraid to use them, both because of the memory of her recent departure and because even more so in her life Qinni always commented on how sad she felt to have her art stolen, and some fans felt that using the sticker without her knowledge would be same.
