Old man yaoi typically describes stories, fanworks, or ships where there are romantic or sexual relationships involving older male characters, The term has gained popularity in Western fandom in recent years and is used even with media or ships that aren't from Japanese anime or manga (yaoi refers to boy's love, a genre of manga and anime centered on romantic relationships among male characters), like House MD[1], Hollywood movies or RPF ships between Western celebrities.
Despite "yaoi" being considered an outdated and even problematic term by some, "old man yaoi" still gained popularity. Alternatively, some fans may argue that it reflects a potential resurgence of the terms yaoi and yuri in Western fandom in recent years, alongside other terms such as 'toxic yaoi/yuri' and 'doomed yaoi/yuri'.
What typically qualifies as "old man yaoi" varies greatly, some believe the term shouldn't be used for any ships with characters not at least in their 50s[2], whereas others have complained that the term is being applied to ships with characters as young as their 30s[3].
