Naruto News was a LiveJournal newsletter community that covered all fannish activity pertaining to both the Naruto manga and anime from 2007 to 2016 with near-daily updates. Naruto News stopped updating in 2016 with 1,713 newsletter issues. As of 2018 their watch journal, naruto_watch, has 360 journals on its friendlist, but when the newsletter was active it may have tracked many more that that.

Like many other newsletters, Naruto News was split up into sections. For much of their run those sections were:

[FAQ question: "What types of material are covered each day under each header?"]

Canon Announcements: Anything pertaining to the manga or anime. This includes: spoilers for manga, Weekly Jump Table of Contents, recaps of the anime, news on Naruto or its creator, and the Raws/Translations/Scanlations thread from Mangahelpers.com.

Community Announcements: Moderator posts in communities, tournament/contest communities submission/voting/reminder posts.

RP Announcements: Role Play communities and forums will be linked to here whenever they advertise. Usually links will go to the RP directory community.

Fanfiction (divided into One-shots and Multi-chaptered): Should be pretty much self explanatory.

Fanart: Any sort of fan-made art, such as drawings, paintings, fan doujinshi, comcis, etc.

Icons, Graphics, & other Fanworks: Icons, wallpapers, FSTs, and animations.

Discussions: Rants, complaints, theories, and discussion topics.

Questions and Searches: Obvious, I would think.

Miscellany: Anything that doesn't fit into the above sections. Including (but not limited to) cosplay, doujinshi sales or uploads, merchandise sales, etc.[1]

It wasn't uncommon for readers to check the newsletter rather than checking the individual comms themselves. One user in 2008 said that they "check it nearly daily and often instead of checking the various comms."[2] Other users commented:

I only lurk in this fandom - so the newsletter is really the only way I check up on stuff. You guys are doing an awesome job[2]
Thank you for doing these posts! :) I get linked to so many interesting fic and discussions this way that I would never know about. So thank you. ^_^[2]

History

alexiel_rieth began the comm in September, 2007 and modeled it after Bleach News.[3] According to the FAQ:

alexiel_rieth noticed that there was no newsletter community for Naruto, and decided to fix this problem by creating one herself. She was already Thursday editor for bleach_news, and back-up editor for fma_herald; so creating her own was an easy decision.[1]

On October 10th, Naruto News reached 100 watchers and alexiel_rieth posted looking for daily and backup editors to help handle the load of collecting links, formatting them, and posting them:

All right, time to make some changes here. It's usually only at night that I'm on the Internet, and having to use the time it takes to do the updates here as well as 45+ minutes to check my own friends page and then there's all the other things I like to do (read comics, check the news, etc)... I just don't have much time to get anything else done (read manga, watch anime, make icons, finish a mood theme, etc). So, as of now, I am on the search for editors to take over most of the posting duties.

What your duties would be as editor:
1) Log in to naruto_watch (the password will be given to the editors)
2) Find the previous naruto_news post
3) Check a few entries before that one to make sure nothing was missed
4) Compile the news update, follow the guidelines in the FAQ post (probably want to do this in Microsoft Word or another word processing program)
5) Log out of naruto_watch and into your own journal
6) Post to naruto_news (posts must be done between 11 PM Eastern Time and 3 AM Eastern Time. Use this time zone converter if you live outside the US.)
...
...
That sounds overly complicated now that I look at it. Don't worry it's pretty easy. And while time-consuming, it's a lot of fun.[4]

The editor schedule was eventually filled for every day — in addition to alexiel_rieth, destinydivine, missrs, stjulie, fyretoppaaa, purplekitteand sunnysides filled out the week so that the newsletter could be compiled and sent out every day[4] but by December 29th alexiel_rieth asked for more backup editors:

We need some back-up editors for when one of the daily editors misses a post.

Here is what you will do:

- At 3AM EST if there has been no update it will then be the back-up editor's job to do the post. (here is a helpful chart that will tell you what time 3AM EST is in other cities around the world)

- Back-up posts should be completed by 11AM EST the next morning (eg- Saturday night's update should be completed before 11AM EST Sunday morning). (here is another helpful chart for 11AM EST)[5]

On January 12th, 2008, the following back-up editors came on board: bones_angel7, jasmine_signet, and parttime_job.[5] On February 28th, alexiel_rieth posted again about needing two new daily editors. jasmine_signet was promoted from back-up editor and a new editor also joined.[6] At the beginning of May, tenaciously joined the editing team as a backup editor to help pick up slack from frequently missed posts.[2] At the end of May, a formal call for more back-up editors went out. oceanica, aisushi, and a third new back-up editor joined. stjulie was planning to leave the position of Wednesday editor in June, so isolabela also joined to take the position from her.[7] Naruto News had also previously only been advertising on chuunin, kakairu, and sasuxnaru and started advertising in other places to good results at this time.</ref>

1. Where did this idea come from?

The editors will try their best to get an update up every night, but sometimes things happen and a day or two may be missed. Update times will usually be between 10 PM and 1 AM Eastern Time.

Any community on the watch list.

5. How can I get my community or journal added to the watch list?
Just go over to this post and leave a reply.

6. Does naruto_news link to friends locked posts?
Yes. As all updates are compiled from the watcher journal, and the watcher journal is a member of most communities, friends locked entries are available to us.

7. When content is located off-LiveJournal, do you link to LiveJournal or the other site?
All links (aside from Mangahelpers RTS threads) go to LiveJournal sites. So you may then have to click on a second link to get to the art/fic/whatever. This is done so that users may comment on entries that they may not be able to on non-LiveJournal sites (eg-DeviantArt).

8. What if I don't want my friends locked posts to be included in these updates?
Go to this post and leave a reply stating your request for withdrawal.
