Mobei-jun/Shang Qinghua, more commonly referred to in fandom by the portmanteau Moshang, is a canon ship in The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. Originally a popular fan ship from the events of the main novel, they were later confirmed as a canon pairing by the author in the "Airplane Extras" chapters and a subsequent interview.[1]

Common Tropes and Headcanons in Fanworks

  • Post-canon or Futurefic - Because Moshang's scenes together come largely from the Airplane Extras, many fans explore post-canon situations between the two where they are in an Established Relationship. A few examples of common scenarios include Shang Qinghua taking on a formal consort (or co-ruler) role in the Northern Desert, Moshang improving their sex techniques after a canonical terrible first time, and Moshang starting a family through Accidental Baby Acquisition, disciple adoption, or Mpreg by magical means (demon biology, pollen, womb tattoo, etc.)
  • Get Together - Conversely, fan creations focused on pre-canon Moshang are also common. Miscommunication is a frequent trope (see Angst). Typically, Mobei Jun will attempt to use traditional demonic Courtship practices, and in some cases human courting practices, only to fail because Shang Qinghua doesn't realize the romantic intent/interest behind them. Explanations for Shang Qinghua's lack of awareness range from general fluffy obliviousness to low self-esteem and past trauma.
  • Monster Fucking and Romance - Monster Moshang is a popular partially due to several fan creation events centered around this trope, especially during the month of October. Mobei Jun is the monster figure in a majority of these creations while Shang Qinghua tends to be the human, unless it is an AU where both are monsters. Exaggerated claws, horns, and hybrid forms are common in Monster!Moshang designs with other anatomy depending on the type of monster (elongated and/or forked tongue, wings, slitted eyes, tails, reproductive anatomy, etc.) Monster!Shang Qinghua tends to have a cuter appearance incorporating some of the features mentioned above but at a smaller size ratio in comparison to Mobei Jun.
  • Alternate Universe - Moshang AUs are popular and vary widely. In a Modern AU, the pair lives in various real world settings instead of the fictional Scum Villain universe, so they might interact in academic, mafia, neighbor, or office plots. Whether they live in China or internationally as diaspora depends on the fan creator, and, in some cases, this remains ambiguous. Common Canon Divergence AU plots might feature reverse transmigration where Mobei Jun is pulled into the real world (see Transmigration subtropes), role reversal where Shang Qinghua is the demon Lord, explicit God!Shang Qinghua, or Shang Qinghua deciding to deviate from the canon events of Scum Villain and/or Proud Immortal Demon Way.
