Snape/Lockhart is a Harry Potter rarepair involving Severus Snape and Gilderoy Lockhart.

Fandom

Snape/Lockhart fic and art date back at latest to 2001. Though a rare pairing in Harry Potter fandom overall, it is the most common pairing for Gilderoy Lockhart, with upwards of a hundred fanworks.

The most common portmanteau for the pairing is Snart, though it is occasionally also smooshed as "Snockhart" or "Snackhart". The FictionAlley Park pairing name "HMS Tigereye" was established in 2002, though the reasoning behind the name is unknown.

Appeal

Most of the interest in the pairing derives from Snape and Lockhart's interactions in Chamber of Secrets. While some fans enjoy this dynamic and its potential for hatesex (at least on Snape's part), others have suggested that the characters are more similar than they initially appear, and so there is potential for a deeper connection:

Everyone's thinking about the celebrity Gilderoy Lockhart. But are you all forgetting the REAL Gilderoy Lockhart? The cunning, evil, decieving one that I, personally, think could be a true equal for the man Severus Snape. The real Gildy, that we only see in the Chamber of Secrets for a few moments before his memory is blasted away, could really make a good lover for Severus. I think they probably were in Slytherin together, if Gildy went to Hogwarts, which the books never say whether or not he did. I think that if Severus knew the real, evil Gilderoy Lockhart they could be much more than just "f*** buddies" as everyone keeps saying. That's why I love this pairing. The two men are so much like each other, only the masks that they are putting up are so opposite that its actually quite cute- the thought of them being together when publically they look like such opposites.[1]

Severus Snape and Gilderoy Lockhart are caricatures at opposite ends of the scale. Snape is greasy, ugly, sarcastic, dark, unpopular and nasty, while the handsome, brightly-dressed Lockhart is the gorgeous darling of the Wizarding World. Yet each character is the opposite of what he appears to be: Snape may look villainous, but it is Lockhart who is the villain. Behind the facades each presents to the world lie two deeply complex characters with a startling number of similarities. The challenge in writing Snape/Lockhart is to bring out these parallels. [...]

Fundamentally, though, both men are manipulative and insecure and hide behind exaggerated personas. It is highlighting those common elements in an apparently diametrically opposed couple that makes the pairing both attractive and challenging.[2]
