Koga/Lt. Surge, known mostly as ToxicBoltShipping and/or マチキョウ (Matikyou or Machikyou), is a rare ship in the Pokémon fandom. It pairs Koga (Kyou) and Lt. Surge (Matisse), the Poison-type Gym Leader and Electric-type Gym Leader from Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow respectively.
Most Koga/Lt. Surge fanworks focus on their appearances in the Pokémon game series. They've also appeared in the Pokémon anime and the Pokémon Special manga.
Canon Background
Popular Tropes & Fanon
- Height Difference: Lt. Surge is taller than Koga. Lt. Surge also has more muscle than Koga, though both are physically fit.
- Opposites Attract: From what is known about both characters, Koga was born and raised in a family of ninjas and has a high tolerance to poison, often using status conditions to win Pokémon battles. Lt. Surge meanwhile is a boisterous American army lieutenant who values raw strength.
- Janine: Koga's canonical daughter. Lt. Surge may be seen as an uncle or second dad.
- Sabrina: Koga, Lt. Surge and Sabrina were originally the three highest ranked members of Team Rocket in the Pokémon Special manga, only under Team Rocket head Giovanni himself. Sabrina may be a tertiary character.
- Erika/Sabrina, the second-most popular same-gender ship between two RBY gym leaders (who aren't Brock, Misty or Giovanni,) may be seen as a sister ship as of the 2010-20s. Many ship both, and they may both be in "Everyone Is Gay" stories.
