Gaia Online is/was a forum site with customizable avatars that reached the peak of its popularity in the late 2000s. The art style and aesthetic greatly appealed to western anime fans, especially at a time before the rise of modern social media platforms.

Outside of fandom/internet circles, the site is somewhat well-known for its in-game economy, which underwent several cycles of massive inflation [1] and attempts to fix the issues stemming from it.

History

Site Features

Users could earn a site currency, "Gold", by posting in the forums and browsing the site. The gold could be used to buy clothes and accessories for their avatar. Eventually, limited-edition items that required real money were introduced as well.

During the early days of Gaia the site featured an art gallery where users could submit and vote on fanart, as well as a linklist with anime-related content.

Community

Forum RP was a big component of the site; many of the site's guilds are dedicated to specific roleplaying settings, using both original and fandom characters.
