Kahu a Alaka’i is a The Sentinel fusion Steve/Danny story by cattraine. It is the first part of the Sentinel 'Verse series. Was podficced in 2015 and translated into Spanish, Chinese and Russian.
Won two awards in the 2012 Hawaii Five-0 Ohana Favorite Awards, in categories "Favorite Steve/Danny - Genre: Crossover" and "Steve/Danny - Genre: Series/Collection".[1]
Summary: In a world where Sentinels serve the military, and Guides are chattel, Steve is an unbonded Sentinel and Danny an unwilling Guide. “Apparently Daniel Williams did not subscribe to the calm, meditative approach to Guiding Sentinels.”

Why we love it: This is an AU where Danny is still a cop, Steve is still a SEAL, and their characterizations are consistent with canon but other than that the setting is wholly new. If a good solid fantasy AU appeals to you then give this one a read. Loosely based on the TV show 'The Sentinel,' this story takes that basic premise and makes it a brand new thing. The world building in this was very effective and the characterizations are well fleshed out. The writing is strong and the story-line packs a great punch. One of the best long reads of the summer, this will leave you very satisfied.[2]

reasons to rec: So, I’m a big fan of AUs in really any fandom I’m in, but I was originally wary of this one because I’m not familiar with the Sentinel fandom - but this author does such an incredible job of setting the scene that the fic really requires absolutely NO background knowledge going in. The reason I adore this fic so much is that this new universe provides the perfect set up for an incredible display of Steve and Danny’s bond. The fic balances between sweet and sexy and funny and angsty with real deftness and it’s an utter pleasure to read. Steve is his usual honorable, idiot self and Danny is loud and brash and caring and they crash together in such an awesome way - ugh, I just can’t praise it enough, I’ve re-read it a bunch of times. (Also, there are two time stamps that are perfect.) Enjoy![3]

Initially I had planned on waiting until the series this fic started was finished before reccing it in its entirety but, to tell the truth, I think this story stands perfectly fine on its own. Beginning pre-canon with a completely different set of rules governing their lives, the Steve and Danny we meet in this fic aren’t necessarily the ones we know from the show. They’re different in a multitude of tiny ways, forced by their own circumstances to act in a way that might be considered out-of-character, but actually ends up helping them grow and develop into the men we know them to be.One of the big things I liked about this fic is that Cattraine doesn't necessarily hold to 'The Sentinel' norm, with both the Sentinel and the Guide overjoyed to finally find one another. Instead, Steve is overjoyed and Danny is rebellious; completely terrified that his life is about to change in the most fundamental of ways. Which it does, but not in the ways he's thinking and that, in and of itself, is refreshing, especially after you've read the number of crossovers with ‘The Sentinel’ as I have.
All in all I'd say that this fic is an enjoyable read and worth giving a try if you’re looking for something different from canon.[4]

Why you should read this NOW: Danny is awesome here, a complete badass even when his biology puts him at a disadvantage. And Steve is a bit of a dork, and too self-sacrificing for his own good. Even if you’ve never seen The Sentinel, this is a very approachable fusion, brilliantly written and everything wonderful about either fandom[7]

What a tense chapter! I even thought Danno had died! I would have been devastated if that had happened! But I thought it was cute that Steve was in that state because Danno was hurt! Lol! And I thought Cath would be jealous of Steve and Danno's relationship, in fact, there is no Jude in the NCIS series. Did the author invent it?[8]
