Help talk:Redirects
Can you create a redirect template, akin to the stub template? I would have done it, but I wasn't sure if that was a gardener level activity. --zvi 20:03, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Hrm. To do a redirect, you just put #REDIRECT [[real link]] and nothing else on the page. The person going to that page, then, never sees it, but is automatically redirected, so we don't really want to add anything else to redirect pages. So I'm not sure what you're looking for? -Melina 20:10, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Since the software considers, say, SVmaria and Svmaria to be different pages, does it matter in which direction the redirect is made? Is there a general rule as to which capitalization should be the primary page? Or is it just that everything redirects to whichever page was created first? --ainsley 16:25, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Just a tip about something I've noticed: as far as I can tell, the redirect tag must be the first text on the page, or it won't work properly. So if you find a redirect that isn't redirecting, see if there's a blank line above #REDIRECT [[real link]]; if so, deleting it will probably fix the problem.--Penknife 17:05, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
more information to add?
Should we add a section on how it's ok to have wikilinks that point to a redirect page and there's no need to bother editing the link to point to the main page name unless the link is actually pointing to the wrong page? (Maybe distinguish between linking to redirect pages vs. linking to disambiguation pages, where it is actually helpful though not urgent to change the link to the exact page intended.) I vaguely recall reading about a phenomenon on Wikipedia of users who try to game the system by making large numbers of trivial edits so they look like helpful users with a lot of experience.
Another section to add might be on what kinds of redirects are useful to add--if you already know the topic is referred to in multiple ways, if you spot red links referring to the page in a slightly different way, etc.--aethel (talk) 03:22, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
Fan Names/Account Names
Hi there! What's the ruling on redirects for fan pages? I've been creating fan pages with the actual name/alias the fan goes by if I can, since many account names can be owned by different people across platforms. But there still may be people searching for those people by their account name. So am I okay to make redirects for their known account names as well? (ex. Kenzo Lloret is also known as Kenz_Kun and KenzoKanijo_Art, etc.) - Jacksbrak (talk) 09:43, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
- Yep, that's what we usually do. And if there are two fans who have the same pseudonym, we can also create a disambiguation page. The only thing to be wary of is linking pseuds to real life names. If the fan links their real life identity to their pseuds, and is clear that they don't mind the two been linked, then a redirect is fine. But if there's any doubt, it's probably better not to link real names to pseuds --Auntags (talk) 22:17, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
