:Yes! I'd very much like to start pages for the US version of The Office, but I don't think I can do that without creating one for the UK version as well. disambiguation help

In addition to the disambiguation section on this page, there is a separate page for Help:Disambiguation Pages. That page doesn't contain much information: should it be changed to a redirect to the disambig section here?--æthel 16:33, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Personally, I'd add a wikilink to the section here (A disambiguation page should also be created. For an example of a disambiguation page, see Closer.) and move everything under that to Help:Disambiguation Pages. Because this page is specifically about page names, the actual content of the disambiguation page may be best on its own page. --sparc 03:04, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

ETA: Sorry, I was referring to "Naming fanworks" section, which seems to repeat a lot of the disambiguation info. I was thinking we could merge these sections and make Disambiguation a sub-section, but then there's things that should be disambiguated in the page name that aren't fanworks (e.g. archives). So maybe we could move all the fanwork-disambiguation up, or keep fanwork-specific info and put "see Help:Naming Conventions#Naming fanworks for naming conventions for disambiguated fanworks" or something to that effect. --sparc 03:56, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Fanfic Disambiguation Page Names

A while back I noticed that there seemed to be a lack of consensus on how to disambiguate specific fanfiction stories, and "fic," "story," and "novel" were being used pretty much synonymously. More recently, I saw that most of the pages using "fic" were moved to "story" (e.g. Crossroads (Harry Potter fic) to Crossroads (Harry Potter story), though Coming Home (SGA fic) seems to currently be an exception). However, this help page still uses "fic" in its first disambiguation example, and then "novel" below.

I'm also unclear on the "novel" disambiguation -- O Sweetest Song (Beauty and the Beast novel) seems to use it to mean novel zine whereas After the End (Harry Potter novel) seems to use it to mean any long fic (in which case, how long must a fic be to be a novel?). The terminology is rather sticky in general, but perhaps it would be best to decide on a single term to apply consistently, and to reflect that on this page? Yeah, I moved a bunch from "fic" to "story" since it seemed like that's how we were starting to name pages mostly (but not consistently). And also I prefer story to fic because (fic) looks weird to me. But I don't think we've ever had a conversation about standardizing fic-related article titles. I think it would be better to have just one standard way of disambiguating fics of any length and distinguish them from novel zines (although there are some online fics that were later published as print zines....). --æþel 15:42, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
