Competition-Set Fic are fanfics and fanworks which focus on a competition. Competitions featured in these fanworks vary wildly in premise and scale.
This term is not common for media which feature canonical competitions such as Yuri on Ice, Haikyuu and other sports anime. This term is also not common for fandoms where canon focuses on its cast needing to survive a deadly game such as The Hunger Games, Saw and Danganronpa.
Common Sub-Tropes
The competitions themselves often come from reality TV plots and sporting competitions, such as the Olympics. Others, such as dance competitions, are also common.
- Rivalry: Competition-Set Fic often focuses on rivalries between the characters competing and how it connects them emotionally. This rivalry is more often friendly than Enemyslash.
- Slow Burn: Often comes prepacked with rivalry fic.
- Humor: The competition itself may be played for comedy or to create comedic scenes, such as a character unfamiliar with baking having to make a cake.
- Matchmaking: In works where the reward is marriage or otherwise starting a relationship.
