Criticism
Based on comic panels and author interviews from the Black Widow comics, Yelena is commonly interpreted to be asexual or aroace.[1] Some fans use the 'canonical basis' of these interpretations to argue against portraying Yelena in ships at all. Other fans push back on this position, pointing to the difference between asexuality and aromanticism, supporting queerplatonic representations of Bishlova, or simply pointing out that fanworks and headcanons don't need to follow canon guidance (or rejecting the presented evidence as clearly canon).[2]
