Saw is an American horror film series revolving around the fictional serial killer John Kramer (AKA Jigsaw) and his apprentices. Rather than killing victims outright, Jigsaw places them in life-threatening traps which he refers to as "tests" or "games".

There are currently ten films, eight of which are considered to be part of the 'main franchise';

Background

The first film was released in 2004, originally premiering at the Sundance Film Festival[1], before being picked up for distribution by Lionsgate[2]. The story was first conceived by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, who adapted a section of the original screenplay into a short film[3] (often referred to as Saw 0.5) to show production companies[4]. The screenplay was written by Leigh Whannell, who starred opposite Cary Elwes. The cast also included Danny Glover, Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, and Ken Leung.

The film was shot in only 18 days, with minimal pre-production. Two commentary tracks and a 'making of' short would later be released.
