Bones is a TV series based on the work and life of Kathy Reichs, a forensic anthropologist and the mystery writer who created the character of Dr. Temperance Brennan (aka "Bones"), though the TV show's Brennan is more based on Reichs herself than her work. Forensic anthropologist, Dr. Temperance Brennan, and former Army sniper and cocky (like his belt buckle says) FBI special agent Seeley Booth assemble and develop a team to investigate murders. Most often, there is only rotten flesh or mere bones left to examine.

Canon

Brennan is partnered with FBI agent Seeley Booth, and the show also focuses the members of her workplace, the fictional Jeffersonian Institute: Angela, Hodgins, Cam, Zach, and Sweets. As of season four, Zach is no longer a part of the show's regular cast, though his character has made a few guest appearances.

Lab assistants/interns that joined the series after Zach left, they usually rotated episode-to-episode ad were referred to as Squinterns both in canon and by fans.

Caroline Julian (portrayed by Patricia Belcher) is a U.S. Attorney's prosecutor and a reoccurring character, that often helps Booth and Brennan.

Fandom

Many media fans came to Bones by following David Boreanaz, who plays Booth, from BTVS and Angel; the show is also popular with fans of procedurals and fans who like shows with strong female characters (e.g. BTVS, Alias, etc.).

Bones easily--and constantly--passes the Bechdel Test.

Since Bones aired on the Fox network, the Fox website had a section dedicated to Bones. This area included a forum that was one of several places fans of the show congregated. The forums had a number of sections, including one fore fanfiction. Fan writers often cross posted to both the forum and fanfiction.net, but because referring to fanfiction.net (or any other fandom site) was prohibited in the TOS, authors would simply refer to "the other site". They then had to come up with creative ways to explain when someone didn't know what was meant by the phrase.

Shipping

The primary het pairing of the fandom is Booth/Brennan, followed by Angela/Hodgins. There is some other het pairings, but they are all mainly rarepairs. There is some femslash pairings, such as Angela/Brennan, Angela/Roxie and Camille/Brennan, but again they are mainly rare. There are some slash pairings such as Seeley/Sweets, Seeley/Hodgins, and Seeley/Zack but again they are rare.

Crossovers

Crossovers with other crime show such as NCIS and the CSI franchise are common, as are Supernatural crossovers. Since a large part of the fan base followed Boreanaz there are many Buffyverse crossovers, and Booth's resemblance to Angel is usually mentioned, with an assumption of common ancestry or that Angel was Booth's distant ancestor when human. A subset of these stories assumes that Booth WAS Angel; it was canon for Angel that a "vampire with a soul," usually assumed to be Angel, would eventually become human, this assumes that he somehow became Booth when this happened. The internship system shown in the series makes it easy to slot in appropriately-aged characters if they are bright enough and can be written as having useful skills; examples include post-Buffy Dawn Summers, post-books Harry Potter, etc.
