The Internet Archive is a digital library "of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more."[1] Their main claim to fame is the Wayback Machine, an archive of the web dating back to 1996, but many other digital collections have been added to the site, some uploaded by regular users. See the Wikipedia page for more.

Fans have long used the Wayback Machine to find fanfiction and fansites that have disappeared. Because the site allows users to upload materials, some fans have used the Internet Archive as a fanworks archive.

2024 outages

In October 2024 the Internet Archive was taken down following a cyberattack.[1] Archive.org became available again for read-only used on 21 October,[2] and by the end of October most services were back online.[3] As the Internet Archive is a popular host for fanworks which cannot directly be hosted on AO3, such as podfic, fans became increasingly concerned with finding alternate hosts.

  • Tumblr polls on podfic hosting options: [2], [3]
  • Fanartists and podficcers posting about where else they would be hosting: [4], [5], [6]
