Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 Disney film based on the French fairy tale La Belle et la Bête. Due to its popularity, it spawned two direct-to-video sequels, Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997) and Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World (1998). It was also adapted into a Broadway musical in 1994, and a live-action remake of the original was released in 2017, with Emma Watson playing Belle.

Once Upon a Time
Belle first appeared on Once Upon A Time in the first season,[1] her role was originally reoccurring however it expanded to being a main character in the second season and onwards. Her father, Maurice, and Gaston also appeared in the series. Beast's role was given to Rumplestiltskin who appears in the series as the Dark One (main reoccurring villain in the series) as well as Crocodile from Peter Pan.
Fandom
The Disney version of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale has a small fandom. Belle/Beast is the fandom's OTP, although there are a few fans of Belle/Gaston.
Beauty and the Beast is a fairly common crossover in the Disney Fandom, often pairing up Belle or Beast with another Disney character; for example Belle/Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Other crossovers with non-Disney works are common as well, such as Beast/Odette from the Swan Princess.
Other people in the community often appreciate Gaston and regard him as a popular character, citing his song with variants like "Nobody does x like Gaston". He's been popular in a lot of YouTube videos and co-stars alongside Frollo in The Frollo Show.
Relationship to an Earlier Retelling
The Disney movie was released during a tumultuous time in for another fandom, the live-action television series Beauty and the Beast (TV), which had been recently canceled.
Fans of this older show were anxious about network promises regarding syndication, as well as the promised production of a feature film. See The Long-Rumored Koslow Beauty and the Beast Movie.
Fans of this older series expressed mixed feelings about the Disney movie. Some fans felt the extra attention to any "Beauty and the Beast" productions was a good thing as it would generate interest and promote their show as well. Other fans felt that the Disney movie would make TPTB less likely to produce the Koslow version.[2]
Fans of the Koslow version also expressed their unhappiness that the Disney's version's Beast returned to his original body, preferring that the Beast remain physically a beast.[3][4]

- ^ "I didn't want to lose the Beast either - he had a wonderful, noble face which was far more interesting than that of the Prince he changed back into. But Belle could never have had a 'Happy Life' with the Beast; we saw the way the villagers reacted when they saw him, he would never have been left to live his life in peace, and he and Belle would have had to live in constant fear of what they might do next to try and 'kill the Beast'. Also, the whole point of the story is that outer appearances mean nothing, so we should be happy that Belle was able to share a normal life with the man whose heart she fell in love with." -- from Chatterbox (August 1995)
