Some Excerpts
I love the characters and their relationship. I was blown away by the way they didn't shy away from showing us they cared for one another. Of course, the fact that they were both gorgeous didn't hurt things either.
I could (and have) watched ["Shootout"] so many times that it's imprinted on my brain. Starsky is wonderful as he tries to keep up a brave face, tries to help Hutch despite the fact that he's bleeding to death and his arm is numb. His lame attempts at humor make him so sweet and vulnerable. And I believe this episode is Hutch's finest hour. He's brave, caring, resourceful, and full of indignant rage. No one plays "anger" like Hutch! They continue to work together as a team throughout the entire ordeal. Their expressions of caring and love for one another are so vivid in this episode. What's not to like (except some of those corny extra characters, LOL!)
I wrote my first Starsky & Hutch story, "Betrayal," in 1999 after having discovered fan fiction on the web. I was inspired by the other writers. I remember saying to my husband, "I wish I could do that." His response was, "Well, why don't you?" He knew I had written short stories since I was nine years old, and I had shared with him my deep, dark secret of writing stories about the Beatles while in high school. I guess that was a form of fan fiction. But in the 1960s, we certainly didn't acknowledge there was such a genre. He bought me a laptop and said, "Go for it!"
People who have read my stories know I've written two that deal with resolutions to "Starsky vs. Hutch". The whole story was so out of character. I have trouble accepting our guys would let a woman come between them. I would have written the episode showing the conversation that took place between them -- where they acknowledged they'd been had, and Hutch apologized to Starsky for hurting him. Then I would have had them confront Kyra very directly and dump her. I found the whole episode was very frustrating!
My favorite right now is Lost. We also watch all the CSI series, Monk and Numb3rs. I don't think there is anything out there remotely equivalent to S&H right now. I was addicted to Buffy the Vampire Slayer until it went off the air. Talk about intricate relationships and undying friendships! That series was chock full of h/c, adventure, and loyal friendships....I occasionally read fanfic in other fandoms, but don't have the time or the inclination to write it. To do a good job, I'd have to immerse myself in the episodes like I have S&H. There just isn't enough time... I enjoy stories with plots and a good dose of h/c. I don't care for stories where the h/c is over the top and the guys are mutilated and mangled beyond belief. In addition to Starsky & Hutch, I enjoy reading fan fiction from The Pretender, Buffy, and Lord of the Rings.
