Monk is a USA Network comedy drama starring Tony Shalhoub as the titular character, Adrian Monk, an ex-police detective with obsessive–compulsive disorder who works as homicide consultant.
Canon
After the murder of his wife, Trudy Ellison Monk, Adrian’s OCD became so severe he was unable to leave the house for years. By the start of the show, he’s recovered enough to be a homicide consultant for the San Francisco police department, where he used to work. However, his OCD and many phobias still impact him significantly and he’s often shown in therapy for them. Other major characters are his carer/assistant - originally Sharona Fleming and later Natalie Teeger - and Captain Leland Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant Randy Disher from the police department. Each episode follows them solving a different murder case, but Adrian’s main goals are always to solve Trudy’s murder and to be well enough to be a detective again.
There was also a film called ‘Mr Monk’s Last Case’ released on 8th December 2023, in which he comes out of retirement to solve a case impacting a family member.
