A Series of Unfortunate Events is a children's book series by Daniel Handler (under the pen name Lemony Snicket), as well as a film and TV series under the same title. It recounts the tumultuous history of the three Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus & Sunny, and their nefarious guardian, Count Olaf. The books are particularly known for their narrative style.
Fannish Perspective
These books, although each comes packaged in warnings about the terribly depressing subject matter, appeal to fans of all ages for that exact reason. These aren't your average children's books. Steeped in mystery, danger, and depression, they delight readers through the stilted, macabre humor. The series is prime fodder for fans due to the limited narrative which leaves plenty of room for interpreting the feelings of each character. This has led to an explosion of slash, incest, and child/adult pairings.
Fandom
The majority of fanworks communities on LiveJournal were destroyed by Strikethrough, and very few fic remained in the aftermath. As the 2003 movie was four years prior to Strikethrough, most of the removed fic was never ported to AO3 or reposted in any capacity and is considered lost.
The fandom was a small rarelit fandom which grew slightly with the movie's release; due to the lack of sequels, the fandom seemed to slow slightly and remains relatively small. Archive of Our Own has only a handful of fanworks, with most of the fandom on LiveJournal and FanFiction.Net. The fandom exploded again with the Netflix TV series release in January 2017, especially on Tumblr, with various reactions, discussions, and fanworks including fanart, gifsets and fanfiction.
The series makes excellent fodder for crossovers that pastiche the much-loved narrative style of the books.
