2001: A Space Odyssey is a film based on Arthur C. Clarke's short story "The Sentinel."
The plot revolves around astronauts on a mission to find and study a monolith with help from supercomputer HAL 9000, and everything that goes wrong.
It spawned a less-heralded sequel, 1984's 2010: The Year We Make Contact. The film was highly influential in the development of the science fiction genre and the depiction of Artificial Intelligence in mainstream fiction.
