WynCatastrophe, a graduate student in Cultural Studies at George Mason University began writing and publishing in 2009 online. Intense and prolific, her stories range from parody to drama to character study to epic.
"I write Star Wars fan fiction. My longest (and favorite) fic is a frighteningly long WIP centering on Anakin Skywalker's story and told partly from the point of view of a few outsiders."
She has made a blanket statement about original characters in fanfiction: "I like 'em. I enjoy creating new characters and exploring their personalities. I like when other people do it, too. I take the point of view that all characters were at some point original, and fan-created characters have been one of my great joys in reading and writing fan fiction."
From broad to narrow focus, the joy of writing fanfiction can be expanded to show how feedback and encouragement shape a story. Many say that the folkloric qualities of such interaction form a definite community of effort. Wyncatastrophe takes one step back from the source material, that of stories, and analyzes the ways in which our complex interactions as fans, who critique, parody and comment upon our fannish activities, produce meaningful levels of performance.
