From the editorial:

Welcome. As you probably know by now, you are holding a copy of the first issue of UNIVERSAL TRANSMITTER. Big deal, you say. Well, it is a big deal -- for us. UNI has been a major portion of Tom's and my life for almost a year, and to see it finally in print makes us feel all. warm inside. When you're entering a field such as the fanzine business, and you're hoping to succeed, you have to be something special. The fanzine world is already populated with one-shot zines, zines published on a regular basis, big zines, little zines, specialty zines, good zines, not-so-good zines (though all are well-intentioned).

One necessary quality is needed to keep even the finest, most creative effort on its feet: audience appeal. If the public doesn't like it, it won't do any good to put out future issues.

This brings us back to UNI #1. It Is a zine which, we feel, incorporates some of the best creative talent in this field. But do we have the audience appeal?"
